Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) Week 7 Recap

The final week of the regular season of the Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) is in the books.Β Β The Saint John Storm not only suffered their first defeat of the season, but by virtue of the tiebreaker are no longer the top ranked team in the league standings.Β Β The Moncton Vipers defeated the Storm 23-7 to secure first place and top seed in the playoffs.Β Β Meanwhile, the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators ended their regular season on a winning note, as they defeated the Halifax Xplosion 29-6.

Now that the regular season is over, the semi-finals are on tap this upcoming week in the MWFL.Β Β The top ranked Vipers will face the fourth place Xplosion in one game while the second ranked Storm will go head to head with the Lady Gladiators.Β Β Both games will be held on Saturday July 14th in New Brunswick.

Here are the results for Week 7 action:

Moncton Vipers 23, Saint John Storm 7:

At K.V. High School on Saturday late afternoon, it was mission accomplished for the Moncton Vipers as they handed the Saint John Storm the team’s first loss of the season.Β Β The Vipers defeated the Storm 23-7 in a game that was delayed due to weather conditions.

Vipers quarterback (also acting head coach) Jenny Miller connected with Tara Keohan on the third play of the team’s first possession of the game to score a touchdown.Β Β With Janelle Brine’s successful conversion attempt, the Vipers went up 7-0 in the first quarter.Β Β Then, Keohan scored her second major of the game to strengthen the Vipers lead 13-0.

However, the Storm replied back when quarterback Lisa Harlow threw a touchdown pass to Lori Boyles.Β Β With Megan Mullet’s conversion attempt being good, the Storm was within striking distance, trailing 13-7.

Marie Noelle Beaulieu rushed for a 56 yard touchdown score to put this game out of reach.Β Β Brine not only had a successful conversion attempt, but she also added a field goal in the dying minutes of the game to give the Vipers the win.

Defensively, the victors were led by the solid play ofΒ Karen Newcombe, Karen Lewis, Christina Bernard, Theriault, Beaulieu and Lucie Kelly.

“All had great tackles and made huge defensive plays,” adds Miller.

The Vipers and Storm both ended the regular season with identical 5-1 records; however, by virtue of tiebreakers, the Vipers end up with the first seed in the playoffs.

The Moncton Vipers will host the Halifax Xplosion for a semi-final tilt on Saturday July 14th, 2012 at Tantramar High School in Sackville, New Brunswick.Β Β Kickoff is 4:00pm.Β Β Meanwhile the Saint John Storm will entertain the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators on Saturday July 14th, 2012 at K.V High School.Β Β Game time is 4:00pm.

Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators 29, Halifax Xplosion 6:

On Saturday late afternoon at Scotia North, the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators found their way back to the win column as they defeated the Halifax Explosion 29-6.

With the win the Lady Gladiators secured third place in the regular season standings while the Xplosion remained in last spot.

The Xplosion scored their first touchdown of the regular season in the second quarter of the game, when Ashley scored on a one yard quarterback dive.Β Β Offensively, the team had ten first downs, and drove the ball into the end zone twice in the loss.

“We wereΒ short of players and there was brutal humidity so multiple players were going both ways and special teams,” summarizes Tasha McMaster of the Xplosion in her postgame comments.

The Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators now get set to faceoff against the Saint John Storm in one semi-final game on Saturday July 14th, 2012 at K.V. High School.Β Β Kickoff is 4:00pm.Β Β As for the Halifax Xplosion, they will travel to Sackville, New Brunswick to go up against the Moncton Vipers in the second semi-final on Saturday July 14th, 2012.Β Β The game will be played at Trantramar High School and starts at 4:00pm.
