Sandberg defines the fighting spirit of Foothills Outlawz
Having competed in the Okotoks Lady Outlawz (now Foothills Outlawz) inaugural season in 2013, Sherry Sandberg had the opportunity to achieve a lifelong dream of getting the opportunity to compete in the gridiron. Although the club endured the struggles that accompany an expansion club, Sandbergβs dedication help set the tone for this hard-working group of dedicated gridiron ladies.
As her father was born in the football mad province of Saskatchewan, the love of the game is definitely in her blood. Lining up as a defensive tackle, the opportunity to break barriers and participate in the growing game of female football is one that was several years in the making.
βI grew up with my Dad being a huge Rider fan (having been born and raised in Saskatchewan). Then in high school, the girls were allowed to play flag football in phys ed and it totally ignited my interest in playing football. It was not an option easily attained in the late 1980βs.
I stayed close to the football field as a cheerleader for our high school boysβ team for two years (so close but yet so far from being able to suit up). When I had my son I was able to get involved again with football as he’s turning out to be a natural born linebacker going into Pee Wee next season! β
Proving that the best things come to those who wait, the chance to wear the Outlawz black and purple jersey was well worth it. As one of several mothers whose sons also played in the game, it helped bring a common ground to a group of teammates that quickly evolved into friends. Despite the expansion woes that accompanied part of the experience, it was a feeling of thrill and exhilaration that Sandberg truly treasured.
βOur inaugural season, our head coach had the gift of inflating our ego’s so when I stepped foot upon the field for the first time as a football player, instead of a cheerleader, it was an adrenaline rush like no other experience in the world can compare to!
Playing Defensive Tackle, and believing you have shoulders that will stop anything – when that O-line splits and their running back comes charging full force towards you – inside you say WTF as you are anticipating the play. Bracing yourself for the hurt, you remember “the lower man wins” and the next thing you know, their running back is falling over! Playing in the WWCFL is an honour, a privilege and a surge of energy that keeps you on a high until next game!!β
Stoic and humble, Sandberg was the teamβs lunch pail worker. While she did not feel she was one of the squadβs leaders, her work ethic and dedication definitely set a positive example for her teammates. Her encouragement and support towards her teammates could not be contained, providing a boost of morale to the nascent franchise.
βI did not see myself as a leader at all – every practice and every game I would step on that field and my inner cheerleader came out – I was supporting my girls, encouraging my girls and protecting them.
Although the Outlawz are not part of the WWCFLβs schedule for 2014, it shall serve as an opportunity to rebuild. Donating her time to the cause, Sandberg is part of a remarkable group of inspiring and empowering women helping to turn the page and write a new and exciting chapter in womenβs football in Alberta. While the task may be a monumental one, it is a labour of love that is poised to yield very positive results.
βEven though we are not dressing for the field this season, we are still a team and you are still going to see us around! I have taken on a marketing role donating my advertising, marketing and PR education to the Foothills Outlawz. I am working on rebranding the team, recruiting, securing a home field in the Foothills area and building a positive presence in the community.β
A cause close to her heart, Sandbergβs efforts truly embody the true meaning of team spirit. While the wait to return in 2015 may seem like an eternity at the moment, the patience needed to wait has become one of the values which strengthened her. There is no question that the great reward of fielding a stronger team for the long term is one that will improve the quality of the game for all involved.
Currently, the feeling of friendship between the women that Sandberg is working with only helps to create a strong foundation upon which the club can build towards that strong comeback in 2015. The dedication displayed truly defines the character of the women in the WWCFL.
βI am also taking on the Co-GM position with Natasha Cyr to help redirect the team. Others stepping up in administrative functions are Sherrie Toews, with event planning and recruitment, and Megan Gilks and Patti Fleck-Whitfield.
In addition we have amazing support and encouragement from the league that we are so grateful for. I know as this season begins we will be in full support and cheering on the Rage and the rest of the league – these are amazing women we had the privilege of facing on the field last season and cannot wait to play again!β
