CISAA: St. Andrew’s Beats Ashbury to go to the Finals

All season long, St. Andrew’s has been dominating every team in the division. There was no doubt that St. Andrew’s was going to win this game, the only question was by how much they were going to win. St. Andrew’s offense was led by quarterback Chris Merchant who threw two touchdown passes and kicked six PATs. Half back Cole Sopik led the scoring with an amazing performance, scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 180 yards. Other scorers included slot back Malcolm Carter and wide receiver Daniel Cummings. “Although it wasn’t a huge challenge for us, we didn’t look over Ashbury and got off to a fast start”, says Saints head coach Len Gurr. “Most importantly we got out of it (the game) injury free”.

Ashbury came into the game well prepared. Their coaching staff did an excellent job planning for the semi-final game. Ashbury had a fantastic year going 2-3; not an easy feat for any team in arguably one of the best high school football divisions in Ontario.

St. Andrew’s will play in a rematch of last year’s CISAA Championship game against the Upper Canada College Blues. St. Andrew’s played UCC in week two of the regular season where they trailed the Blues for a part of the game. UCC posed to be St. Andrew’s hardest opponent so the championship game should be a close one. “We aren’t surprised to be playing UCC again”, says Gurr. “They are well coached and have some really talented players. It will be an immense challenge for us”. The game will take place this Wednesday at 1:30PM at St. Andrew’s College. The Saints are not relying on a home field advantage to get them through this game. “It really doesn’t matter”, says Gurr. “We have beaten them on their field, and they have beaten us before on ours. That being said being able to play at home and share it with the crowd is awesome”. It will definitely be a great game to see if you are in the Aurora area tomorrow afternoon.
