CIS: OUA, Canada West, RSEQ players of the week

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 21, 2012.
OFFENCE: Paul Cecile, Waterloo Warriors, Receiver
Paul Cecile (Azilda, Ont.) led the way in Waterloo’s second half offensive outburst in their 48-29 win over Windsor on Saturday. The second-year wide receiver had three touchdown receptions and pulled in a total of eight catches for 246 yards, including a 60-yard catch and run for the major early in the second half that ignited the Warrior bench.
DEFENCE: Christian Mahler, Waterloo Warriors, Defensive back

Christian Mahler (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) saved the best for last. The second-year defensive back stepped up his game to intercept the ball three times for 98 yards in Waterloo’s 48-29 win over the Windsor Lancers. Mahler also collected two solo tackles in what was a dominating performance by the Waterloo defence. The recreation and business student has a total of seven interceptions on the season which tops the leader board in both the OUA and CIS.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Matthew Falvo, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Kicker

Matthew Falvo had a memorable final game, setting two new OUA records in Saturday’s 32-29 loss to Western. The Welland, Ont. native made good on all five of his field goal opportunities on the day, establishing the new OUA career record for field goals at 75. It was the second five field goal game of Falvo’s illustrious career. Falvo’s OUA field goal record is good for second in the CIS record books. He is also tied for fourth all-time in CIS scoring.
In the midst of kicking those record setting field goals, Falvo unloaded a punt from deep in Gee-Gee territory which found open field, took a bounce, and made it 98 yards before a Mustang player was able to reel it in. That set another OUA record as the longest punt, breaking a 27 year old record. However, he was two yards short of the 26 year old CIS record.
Canada West football Players of the Week: Greene, Dwyer, Walker
EDMONTON – UBC QB Billy Greene, Regina halfback Joey Dwyer and Rams teammate Jamir Walker are Canada West football Players of the Week.
OFFENCE: #11 Billy Greene, UBC
Fifth-year quarterback Billy Greene engineered a dramatic comeback that would fall just short Saturday afternoon in Manitoba, throwing for four touchdown passes in the second half, as the Thunderbirds lost 37-31 to the University of Manitoba.
Trailing 30-4 at the half, Greene threw four second half touchdown passes to Andrew Darcovich (2), Patrick Bull, and Jordan Grieve. The 98 yard touchdown pass to Grieve set a new UBC record for the longest reception.
Greene finished the day with 428 yards passing moving into 4th all-time in the Canada West in career passing yards with 8,322. He also became UBC’s all-time career leader in passing yards moving past Blake Smelser.
The Surrey, BC native also rushed for another 70 yards, increasing his season total to 548 yards rushing on the year. The third most yards rushing in the conference. He is averaging 8.3 yards per carry.
Next Friday night vs. Saskatchewan will be Greene’s final game in the CIS.
DEFENCE: #27 Joey Dwyer, Regina
Making just his second career start, University of Regina first-year halfback Joey Dwyer had a stellar performance in the Rams’ 12-9 win over No. 2-ranked and previously unbeaten Calgary on Friday night in Regina.
Dwyer scored the only touchdown of the game for the Rams, picking off an Eric Dzwilewski pass near midfield late in the first quarter – his first career interception – and running it back 54 yards to the house. He also had two pass breakups, including a key one late in the contest that put an end to a Calgary drive and forced a punt with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Dwyer also had five solo tackles and two assisted tackles in the win.
The Rams (5-2) finish off the Canada West schedule next Friday at home against Alberta (0-7).
SPECIAL TEAMS: #22 Jamir Walker, Regina
Though he’s widely known for his ball-hawking abilities as one of the most prolific defensive backs in Canada West history, the University of Regina’s Jamir Walker reminded onlookers what he can do as a returner in the Rams’ 12-9 win over No. 2-ranked and previously unbeaten Calgary on Friday night.
Late in the third quarter, Jamir Walker collected a missed field goal attempt seven yards into the end zone and returned it 86 yards, bringing it all the way down to Calgary’s 31-yard line before finally being brought down. In a game where points were at a premium, the return set up a rouge for the Rams and gave them a 12-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Walker’s punt return was the longest of his career and the second longest in University of Regina history, trailing only a 95-yard effort by Steve Ryan in 2006.
Also the U of R’s career leader in average yards per punt return (14.5), Walker ended up with 102 yards on two punt returns in Friday’s win. He also had three solo tackles and one assisted tackle in the victory..
The Rams (5-2) finish off the Canada West schedule next Friday at home against Alberta (0-7).
RSEQ

Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze et Byron Archambault ont été nommés respectivement joueurs offensif et défensif de la dernière semaine dans la Ligue de football du Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ). Les deux joueurs ont joué un rôle important dans la victoire de 44-0 des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal sur le Redmen de McGill samedi dernier.
Le quart-arrière Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze, étudiant en droit et diplômé en administration de HEC Montréal, a connu une autre excellente performance. Il a complété 20 de ses 23 passes pour des gains de 305 verges. Il a maintenant complété 68,1% de ses tentatives passes cette saison. Cela lui confère le troisième rang au pays dans cette catégorie. De plus, le joueur de 23 ans originaire de Repentigny a fracassé l’ancienne marque d’équipe pour le plus grand nombre de passes de touché en une saison en en complétant trois. Il en a lancé 13 jusqu’ici, deux de plus que la saison dernière, où il en avait réussi 11.
Cependant, sa troisième passe de touché du match a été la plus spéciale de toutes puisqu’il l’a lancée à son frère recrue Samuel (Administration, HEC Montréal). Il s’agissait de la première passe complétée à vie entre les deux frères.
Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze a aussi couru deux fois avec le ballon pour des gains de 18 verges. Il a quitté le match au troisième quart, alors que le pointage était de 39-0.
En défense, les Bleus ont réalisé un deuxième blanchissage cette saison. Ils l’ont fait en dominant l’adversaire et en ne leur concédant qu’un maigre total de 78 verges à l’attaque. Le secondeur Byron Archambault (Sécurité intérieure) a été l’un des artisans de cette réussite. Il a réussi un total de 6,5 plaqués, dont cinq en solo et un sac du quart. Le Montréalais de 21 ans est présentement le meneur de la formation au chapitre des plaqués cette saison avec 38,5.
Nadeau-Piuze mérite cet honneur pour la deuxième fois cette année. Il avait été choisi après la première semaine. De son côté, Archambault succède à Jean-Samuel Blanc (Arts et sciences), qui avait été choisi joueur défensif des deuxième et cinquième semaines. La semaine dernière, le botteur David Deschamps (Arts et sciences) avait été sélectionné sur les unités spéciales. Mikhaïl Davidson (Mathématiques et économie) avait aussi été choisi après la quatrième semaine.
