REGINA, Sask. β University of Regina Rams head coach Mike Gibson announced Wednesday that the club has received its first commitment for the 2016 season, as offensive lineman Bowen Pisula has signed a CIS Letter of Intent.
Pisula is the starting left guard for the powerhouse LeBoldus program in Regina, but also has extensive experience at centre and thatβs where Gibson projects him to play at the CIS level.
βBowen has all the qualities you want in an offensive lineman β tenacity, toughness, and nastiness,β Gibson said. βObviously centre is a position weβre going to have a need for, with (Nathan) Cugnet our only returning true centre. Weβve got other guys who weβve moved around to be a backup there, but Bowen knows how to make calls and realizes the centre is the quarterback of the offensive line and he could come in here and challenge for a spot right away.β
LeBoldus is already 2-0 this season as the Golden Suns have started their search for a fourth consecutive 4A provincial championship. Pisula, who checks in at 6-2 and 275 lbs., is in his third year as a starting offensive lineman and his fourth year overall with the John Foord-coached LeBoldus team. Last year he was one of two LeBoldus offensive lineman to earn Schwann Conference all-star honours, the other being current Rams defensive lineman Matt Moore.
Pisula has represented the province at the last two Football Canada Cups, including at the 2014 event in Saskatoon where he helped Team Saskatchewan Green to a silver medal along with five other players who are currently on the Rams roster including fellow offensive linemen Liam Jensen and John Lerach.
He was a standout at the 2015 Football Canada Cup held in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., earning a spot on the tournament all-star team. That honour earned him an automatic invitation to play for Canadaβs U18 team at the 2016 International Bowl, which will be held next spring at a location to be announced. And Pisula wonβt be the only member of the Rams family participating in the International Bowl, as U of R defensive backs coach Sheldon Gray was recently named to the U18 teamβs coaching staff.
Pisula is the first member of the Ramsβ 2016 recruiting class. His commitment will help bolster a line that loses Keenan Carrier, Kyle Paterson, Aaron Picton, and Jeremy Zver following this season.
