RSEQ RECAPS: Carabins secure second place, Vert et Or & Rouge et Or win [stats]

Montreal – Β The Montreal Carabins controlled their desitny and took the opportunity to hold a firm grip on second place in the RSEQ standings with a 22-17 victory over the Concordia Stingers Saturday afternoon in front of 3790 spectators at CEPSUM.

The Carabins (6-2) will have home advantage in the RSEQ semifinals. They host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (5-3) at CEPSUM next Saturday, November 7th at 2:00pm.

“It was a close game, it complicated life a little, but we were able to find a way to win and we showed character in the fourth quarter to win,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. Β “We end the season on a three win streak and it will serve as an impetus for the playoffs.”

After the Carabins offence experienced some trouble in the first three drives, Gabriel Cousineau took things into his own hands when Concordia was leading 17-12.

After a great effort by Regis Cibasu to win a first down, Cousineau managed a 54-yard run that led to a 23 field goal from Louis Philippe Simoneau. This cut the lead to 17-15 early in the fourth quarter.

“It was an excellent choice of play by our coaches,” said Cousineau about his longest run of the season. Β “I saw that there was no one and I rushed at full speed.”

“Our linemen did all the work, I just had to run.”

When they regained the ball, the Carabins offence started at 64 yards. However, the 28 yard field goal attempt was unsuccessful and the Carabins were content with a single.

Then a crucial interception by MaΓ―ko Zepeda gave back the ball to the Carabins. Sean Thomas Erlington followed with a touchdown on a two-yard run and the Carabins regained the lead. The Carabins failed on the two-point conversion.

“We had to do this game,” Zepeda said. “The defensive line put a lot of pressure on their shift and I was able catch the ball.”

“It doesn’t matter whether the offence or the defence makes plays and score points; what matters is that the Carabins put points on the board.”

“We have veterans who react well under pressure and have been able to make big plays when we needed it,” added Maciocia.

With 2:20 left on the clock, the Stingers took the ball and came close to the Carabins 45 yard line before being stopped on third. The Carabins sealed their victory.

“The Stingers quarterback had a good game and we did move our defence late in the game to disturb him,” also said Maciocia.

The Stingers built on their first half to win the third quarter. They scored two unanswered touchdowns to take the lead. First, they crossed 90 yards on the ground and concluded when Trenton Miller connected with Jean-Guy Rimpel for a two yard touchdown. After a Carabins punt, the Stingers this time scored a touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Miller to Daniel Skube.

Gabriel Cousineau 2015 vs Concordia

Slow start to the game

After a first quarter with no points except the Carabins getting two points on a safety touch conceded by Stingers, the Carabins offence appeared more in the following quarter. The defence was first handed the ball in a breakaway covering quarterback Trenton Miller. Gabriel Cousineau took advantage and threw a touchdown pass of 15 yards to Philip Enchill to cap off the drive.

The Stingers got into the end zone in turn, but they had to settle for a 15-yard field goal by Keegan Treloar. In the final minute before halftime, Louis-Philippe Simoneau kicked a 37-yard field goal to give the team a 12-3 lead.

The Stingers had the advantage in offensive yards with gains of 352 against 297 for the Carabins. Gabriel Cousineau completed 17 of 25 passes, including one for a touchdown for 116 yards and was intercepted once. His opponent Trenton Miller completed 28 passes in 46 attempts for 286 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Sherbrooke Vert et Or won its eighthΒ Mayor’s Cup on Saturday afternoon October 31 with a Β 42-29 score against the Bishop’s Gaiters, at the University of Sherbrooke.

It was a special game for 14 Β graduating players who played their last game in the regular season with the Vert & Or.

The team did not take long before registering points on the scoreboard. From the first quarter, the Gaiters coughed up the ball and Vert et Or took the opportunity to recover it. The first touchdown was by Vincent ClΓ©roux-Gaudreau on a 17 yard pass from Jeremi Roch.. In this game, Roch set a fourth RSEQ record this season for most career touchdown passes with his 67th. This new record added to the three other RSEQ records and three CIS records.

For their part, the Gaiters used quarterbacks Mathieu Demers and Travis Eman alternately throughout the game.Eman is one who achieved the first touchdown pass for the Gaiters on a 3-yard pass to Zach Graveson.

The 4236 spectators were treated to a great game from the veteran receiver Vincent ClΓ©roux-Gaudreau playing his last home game of his regular season career. He got his second major of the game on a 51-yard run.

An interception from linebacker Olivier Goulet-Veilleux then allowed the Vert et Or to regain possession of the ball. The Vert et Or were not going to miss such an opportunity and rookie Gabriel Polan snuck up into the end zone for his first career touchdown.

At the end of the first half, Bishop’s had a quarterback sack and one interception.Β Gaiters Trevon Millings then scored a touchdown. Both teams retreated to the locker room with a 26-18 mark in favor of the Vert et Or.

The Gaiters were quickly scored early in the third quarter when Jean Gayrard caught an interception and converted it into a 10 yard touchdown.

The two teams were then limited to field goals to increase their offensive production. Kicker Louis Desautels, who came out of retirement this week, managed to increased the team’s lead. He finished the game with four field goals, a single and three converts for a total of 16 points.

Late in the game, the Vert et Or defence resisted the enemy attacks with less than a minute on the clock, allowing it to give the ball to the offence to seal the victory. Polan scored his second touchdown of the game to secure the fifth victory of the season for the Vert et Or.

The Vert et Or’s narrow victory combined with Concordia Stingers defeat at Cepsum by the Montreal Carabins confirms third place for the Vert & Or at the end of the regular season. Β The Vert et Or clash face the reigning Vanier Cup champions at home. The game will be held in the afternoon on Saturday November 7th.

No. 3-ranked Rouge et Or roll past Redmen in football season finale

MONTREAL — Quarterback Hugo Richard passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for two more as No.3-ranked Laval racked up 605 yards en route to a 57-10 victory over McGill to close out the RSEQ football schedule and the 100th season of activities at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

Richard, a 6-foot-2, 216-pound sophomore from St. Bruno, Que., directed an offence that scored seven touchdowns and had a 34-19 advantage in first downs. He completed an impressive 21 of 25 attempts for 265 yards and no interceptions. He also rushed eight times for 92 yards, including a pair of first-half TD runs of 13-and six yards, respectively, before being replaced for the final quarter by freshman Marc-Antoine Langevin, who hooked up with Etienne Moisan for a 12-yard TD toss.

Laval led 15-3 after the opening quarter, 32-10 at halftime and 46-10 after three.

Also scoring TDs in the air for the Rouge et Or was Benoit Gagnon-Brousseau (23 yds) and Felix Faubert-LussierΒ (9 yds). The two other majors were scored on the ground, both in the third quarter, bySebastien Serre on runs of one and two yards. Serrre was a workhorse, finishing with 14 carries for 109 yards.

Kicker Dominique Levesque added 11 points on a 35-yard field-goal, a 49-yard punt single and seven conversions.

For McGill, place-kicker Justin Lavallee gave the Redmen a shortlived 3-1 lead at 6:13 of the opening stanza with a season-longest 35-yard field-goal. Running back Luis Guimont-Mota — who rushed a dozen times for 72 yards — reached the endzone on a seven-yard run midway through the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 22-10.

Redmen rookie quarterback Nicolas English went the distance, completing 19 of 31 for 179 yards, no TDs and two interceptions. He also rushed eight times for 46 yards and was sacked three times. His favourite target was rookie Kevin Etienne, who hauled in six receptions for 71 yards.

Running back Remi Bertellin, a sophomore receiver from France, led the Redmen with 157 all-purpose yards, including 115 on eight kickoff returns, 26 on three receptions and 16 on a pair of punt returns.

The victory clinched the regular season pennant for the Rouge et Or, who finished atop the RSEQ standings with a 7-1 record and will host fourth-place Concordia (4-4) in a conference semifinal at Stade Telus on Saturday, Nov. 7. The other RSEQ semi will feature the second-place Montreal Carabins (6-2) hosting third-seeded Sherbrooke (5-3).

McGill, which posted a somewhat respectable 3-5 record in the wake of going winless in 2014, finished fifth, two wins more than last-place Bishop’s (1-7). A 43-41 last-second loss to Concordia in the Shaughnessy Cup game the previous week sealed McGill’s post-season fate.

REDMEN RAP: DL Ousmane Guindo led the McGill defence with nine total tackles and a forced fumble… DB Anthony Couturier-Lagace had 8.5 tackles… Both Luis Guimont-Mota and Yannick Langelier-Vanasse were also credited with forced fumbles, while Kevin Etienne, Dane Wagner andStephane Ishimwe-Baganizi all registered fumble recoveries… DL Devon Stewart had one QB sack… Veteran receiver Louis Brouillette ended up leading the team in scoring over the season with 43 points… He tallied three TDs and filled in as an emergency back-up kicker, where he made 11 extra points on conversions, to go along with a pair of rouges and four field-goals… Seven seniors expected to graduate were recognized in a pregame ceremony at midfield. They include DB Seth Atoapoma,Β  REC Kenny Baye, REC Yannick Langelier-Vanasse, K Justin Lavallee, DB Alexandre Lefebvre-Tardif, OL Timothy Mitchell and DL Devon Stewart… Another player who has announced that he has retired from football is sophomore middle linebacker Karl Forgues, whose promising career was cut short by a concussion suffered in Week 5 when he was blindsided at Bishop’s. He led the league in tackles during his freshman year and this season, finished fifth with 41.5 tackles in only five contests — three of them QB sacks — for a league-high average ofΒ  8.3 per game. He also had a pair of forced fumbles.
