CJFL: Colts off to good start in training camp

Calgary’s junior football team has beat the heat and now turns its
attention to beating the opposition.

The Calgary Colts completed their weekend of two-a-day workouts in the
blazing July sun β€” five hours on Hellard Field both Saturday and
Sunday β€” to open their Prairie Football Conference training camp.
They now move into single practices through until the start of the
regular season, Aug. 12.

β€œTraining camp so far has gone very, very well,” first year head coach
John Stevens said.

The Colts have a three-team exhibition in Edmonton Aug. 5 again the
Huskies and Wildcats before opening the season seven days later in
Saskatoon against the Hilltops.

The Colts home opener is Aug. 19 at McMahon Stadium. The Regina
Thunder will be the opposition.

The Colts are coming off a 5-2-1 record in 2011; the season ended with
a 32-3 loss to the Hilltops in the PFC final, which followed Calgary’s
easy 55-6 win over the Thunder in the PFC semifinal.

Stevens and his coaching staff are looking at a number areas in which
they are filling holes. Those areas most notably are defensive line
and backfield, which were both hit by graduation.

They have to replace their starting quarterback, Clayton Masikewich.
Jeremy Long, who completed 21 of 47 passes in a backup role in 2011,
is looking like the replacement to start the season.

The quarterback will benefit from having an experienced offensive line
and some good receivers. That includes lineman Gregg Hannah, who
attended Stampeders training camp, and receiver Jimmy Ralph, who did
as well. Leading receiver from 2011, Rodreke Joseph with 30 receptions
for 407 yards and a pair of touchdowns, is also back.

β€œThe receivers could potentially have the most talent of anyone.
The Colts training camp continues through until Thursday, July 26 with
workouts each night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. They will break from July 27
to July 29 before resuming camp each night leading up to Aug. 5.
The coaching staff is filming practice each day and breaking down
film. They are getting players familiar with the bases of their
offences and defences.

β€œThis week we play our offence against our defence. Next week we will
start to put in our scout teams, which means we will play our offence
against (the opponents’) defence and our defence against their
offence,” Stevens said.

Stevens will prepare for the opposition by going on what they saw last year.
β€œIf they have changed an offensive or defensive coordinator we know
that that information is no longer valid,” he said.

β€œIf they do have the same coordinators we will go with that until we
know different.

β€œWe have film on every game from last year that we have broken down
into tendencies. We base a lot of our decisions on that.”

Colts practices are open to the public at Hellard Field in Bowness.
