The clubs clashed for the first time since the Huskies season closing 33-23 win in Saskatoon last October.
The game was scoreless until nearly 8 minutes into the opening period as John Trumpy scored his first touchdown of the 2012 season as he connected with starting pivot Matt Harder on a 32-yard connection. PFC Special Teams Player of the Week Jonathan Heidebrecht put the Huskies on the board with a 23-yard field goal near the end of the frame.
Zach Schmidt would add field goals from 34 & 14 yards out to give the home side a 10-point halftime lead.
Saskatoon would salt away the win in the 3rd quarter with 16 unanswered points, as linebacker Donovan Dale played the role of a pickpocket and pulled the ball out of the hands of a Huskie back & rambled 44 yards for the major score. Brendon Gryba added a score of his own as the Hilltops led 29-3 after 3 quarters.
Nolan Graham made it a 33-point lead as he would score on a 3-yard run. Sam Schwab would get the Huskies lone touchdown of the day as backup signal caller Cole Graham would throw a 6-yard strike with 6 seconds remaining.
The Hilltops move into a 3-way tie for 2nd place with the Wildcats & host Regina on September 7th while the winless Huskies have a date in Calgary on the 8th.

The Thunder returned home to Regina following a wild 52-35 loss in Calgary, while the Rifles were looking to snap an early 2-game slide.

It wasnā€™t a promising start for the Rifles as they were down 14-0 as Landon Bessel would fire a 9-yard touchdown strike to Mitch Thompson that was set up by a 15-yard Bessel run on the previous play. Thompson would strike again as he returned a Brad Mikoluff punt 69 yards to double the Regina lead.
Winnipeg would get started toward the end of the frame & tailback Martin Hovi scored on a 15-yard run to make it 14-7 after 15 minutes. A Ben Koot single would up the Regina advantage, however the Rifles replied in short order as they scored a safety, then took the lead for the first & only time with 20 seconds left as Hovi ran for his second score on a 4-yard run. Winnipeg led 16-15 at the break.
The Thunder would dominate the second half as they went on a 24-0 run.Ā Ā Mitch Handzuik would put Regina in front to stay early in the third as he scored on a 15-yard run, followed by a Clay Cooke touchdown snag. Throw in a Ben Koot field goal and the Thunder had a 16-point lead heading into the final frame.
The lone major of the fourth came as Will Heward reeled in a 64-yard pass from Bessel to make it a 39-16 final.
The Thunder head to Saskatoon on September 7th to square off against the Hilltops in the front end of the Shrine Bowl series.Ā Ā Winnipeg continues its road swing with a date at Clarke Park against the 2-1 Wildcats on the 8th.

The conference co-leaders squared off in the main event of the Sunday triple-bill. The Colts coming into the weekā€™s action coming off a 52-35 home field win over Regina & the Wildcats were enjoying their first official taste of home cooking after playing their first two tilts as the road club and both clubs played it close to the vest in the opening quarter with neither club gaining an advantage.
The Wildcats struck first with a pair of Ideen Samadi field goals from 25 & 30 yards out, however the Colts bolted in front with 3:30 remaining in the half as Chucks Okafor scored on a 1-yard touchdown run that made it a 7-6 game at halftime. Calgary would crack the tight contest open in the third period as Jeremy Long plunged in from a yard out. Derek Cooper connected withĀ Ā Rodreke Joseph for a 10-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-6 after 45 minutes. Samadi added his third field goal of the day. Tailback Jon Waters pulled the Cats to within 5 in the fourth & final period. A bit of Colts chicanery would clinch the win as Andrew Fabian found Jeremy Long on a fake field goal try and the touchdown would give the Colts sole possession of the conference lead.
