OFSAA: Frontenac defense holds strong to win National Capital Bowl

It was a very close match-up between the St. Joan of Arc Knights and the Frontenac SS Falcons for the National Capital Bowl. It came down to the very last play, as the Falcons were able to stop the Knights and hold on for a 37-30 victory. It is the second year in a row that the Falcons were able to capture a Bowl championship and remain one of the highest ranked teams

The first half was close as both teams were able to get points on the board. Frontenac opened the scoring with a two yard run for a touchdown by quarterback no. 7 Tyler Filson, followed ten minutes later with a one yard run by no. 3 Mitch Oā€™Connor. The first quarter ended with a great interception by St. Joan od Arcā€™s defensive back no. 29 Austin Buck, to keep the Knights within a touchdown. In the second quarter St. Joan of Arc answered with a 12 yard touchdown by no. 1 Jesse Alves followed by a three yard run touchdown of their own by quarterback no. 7 Adam Zussino. The half would end with a Frontenac rouge point to finish 22-14.

The second half of the game would prove to be one of the best halves of football during the Bowl Series. The St. Joan of Arc Knights would start with another touchdown by no. 1 Jesse Alves. A failed two point conversion would keep the Knights within two. From there the Falcons would score another touchdown, followed by a Knight field goal to go ahead 30-29.

It came down to the Frontenac offense to get the job done. At the 10:33 mark, running back no. 28 Jacob Riha scored a touchdown on a 17 yard run, followed by a successful 2 point conversion by Tyler Filson. The pressure was put back onto the Falconā€™s defense as the Knights came back down the field. They got all the way back into the Falconā€™s red zone, but were unable to score a touchdown in the last second of the game.

Last year, the Falcons won the National Capital Bowl by a very large margin. ā€œThis game was our toughest game by farā€, says Frontenac Falconā€™s head coach Mike Doyle. ā€œThey are a great team, with a great quarterback. Our offense barely touched the field after the third quarter.ā€ It was definitely a game that came down to defense. Luckily, Falcons quarterback Tyler Filson believed in his team all year long. ā€œIā€™ve had confidence in our defense all year,ā€ says Filson.
