Arceneaux, Smith and Mitchell named Shaw CFL Top Performers

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 ā€” TORONTO (September 27, 2016) ā€“Ā Emmanuel Arceneaux, Jamill Smith and Bo Levil Mitchell were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 14 of the CFLā€™s 2016 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

WR | EMMANUEL ARCENEAUX | BC LIONS

Wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux turned in an impressive performance in the BC Lionsā€™ 23-27 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday night.

The Alexandria, Louisiana native caught seven passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Arceneaux led the Lions to a blistering start, collecting a 14-point lead in the first half.

Arceneauxā€™s first touchdown came at the end of the first quarter off a 26-yard pass from quarterback Jonathan Jennings. Not finished yet, the former Alcorn State Brave closed the first frame with a six-yard completion to sustain another Lions drive. In the opening seconds of the second quarter, he caught a Jennings strike and took it 68 yards untouched for the major to make the score 14-0 in the Lionsā€™ favour following a two-point convert.

Arceneaux sits fifth in the league in receiving yards and is just outside of the 1,000-yard club with 956. He is also tied for second-most receiving touchdowns with seven on the season.

WR | JAMILL SMITH | OTTAWA REDBLACKS

Jamill Smith pushed the Ottawa REDBLACKS to a crucial 29-12 divisional win over the Toronto Argonauts Friday night.

The wide receiver had the standout play of the night with a 109-yard run all the way to the Argosā€™ end zone on a missed field goal.

Midway through the second quarter, Argonauts kicker Lirim Hajrallahu kicked an unsuccessful 52-yard field goal attempt, Smith caught the errant ball and returned it 109 yards for a touchdown to put the REDBLACKS ahead 12-0.

The Ball State product finished the game with 26 punt return yards and 30 kickoff return yards in addition to his 109 return yards from the missed field goal.

The touchdown was his second career CFL major.

QB | BO LEVI MITCHELL | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Mitchell led Calgaryā€™s offence to their 10th straight win Saturday with a last-second push over the Winnipeg to snap the Blue Bombersā€™ own seven-game win streak.

Mitchell completed 29 of his 43 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns. He began on Calgaryā€™s 46-yard line and completed four of six passes on the drive, eventually sending Kamar Jorden into the corner for a five-yard touchdown pass.

Starting from Calgaryā€™s 52-yard line in the second quarter, Mitchell orchestrated a six-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard toss to Lemar Durant for another touchdown. He continued to put the Stampeders in a position to succeed, resulting in a Jerome Messam rushing TD later in the second.

Although the Blue Bombers mounted a comeback to take the lead and put the pressure on, Mitchell only needed the final 20 seconds of the game to push the Stampeders down the field with two fast tosses to Jorden and Durant to set up Rene Paredes for a 52-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.

This is Mitchellā€™s fourth time among the Shaw CFL Top Performers, including Weeks 6, 13, 14, and as a Top Performer of the Month for August.
