103rd Yates Cup: By the numbers

HAMILTON, Ont. – In honour of the 103rd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums, here is a look at Yates Cup figures and stats from around Ontario University Athletics (OUA). The Western Mustangs pay a visit to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Frank Clair Stadium in the nation’s capital on Saturday for the OUA football championship. The game begins at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on The Score Television Network.

103 – The number of times the Yates Cup will have been awarded after this Saturday’s game. The Ottawa Gee-Gees host the Western Mustangs at Frank Clair Stadium on Nov. 13 in the 103rd Yates Cup Championship presented by Pioneer Petroleums.
1976 – The year the Yates Cup was awarded to both the Western Mustangs and Ottawa Gee-Gees. In the late 1970s, the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) football title was awarded to both division champions.
3 – The number of pairs of brothers that play for the 2010 Western Mustangs team. Quarterback Donnie Marshall (London, Ont.) and rookie slotback Brian Marshall (London, Ont.) are both the son’s of head coach Greg Marshall. Brothers Mike and Matt Norman from Chateauguay, Que. and brothers Brent and Darryl Wheeler from Hamilton, Ont. also play together for the Mustangs.
28 – The number of Yates Cup championships the Western Mustangs have won since 1898. They had a four-year Yates Cup streak, winning the OUA championship title every year from 1979 to 1982.

15 – The number of receivers Ottawa’s Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.) threw to in the regular season. Sinopoli’s favourite target all season was Steven Hughes (Ottawa, Ont.) who had 57 receptions for 664 yards this season, good for first in the league.

2 – The number of quarterbacks that will make their first OUA championship start on Saturday. Both Sinopoli and Marshall will be making their first Yates Cup starts in the most important game of the OUA season.
1898 – The first year the Yates Cup was awarded. The University of Toronto was the first team to earn the trophy.

7-1 – The regular season record both the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the Western Mustangs finished with in 2010. The Mustangs lost their only game of the season to their Yates Cup opponents. The Gee-Gees suffered their only loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues in week six.
2008 – The last year the two 2010 opponents met in the Yates Cup final. Western came out on top with a score of 31-17.

4 – The number of times the Gee-Gees have won the Yates Cup. Their first trophy came in 1907 and their last championship was won in 2006.
8 – The number of straight Yates Cup appearances Western head coach Greg Marshall has made while a head coach in OUA. He went to the finals with McMaster from 2000-2003 and went on to be named Western head coach in 2006. Since then, he has taken the Mustangs to the finals every year.
