20 days to go: IFAF Senior World Championship Defensive Record Books…

The top defenses from around the world will meet in Vienna, Austria for the fourth IFAF Senior World Championship.

Five of the competing countries hold the record for fewest yards allowed in a game. The top record is held by The United States who not only did not allow a yard but held Korea to -31 yards on July 10 at the 2007 IFAF Senior World Championship in Kawasaki, Japan.

The next fewest yards allowed in game was recorded by Germany, Japan, Mexico and France – all of which will be competing in Austria. In a 2007 victory, Germany held Korea to just 25 yards while Japan only allowed 59 yards against France and France held Korea to just 79 yards. In 1999, Mexico held Finland to just 61 yards to earn a spot in the championship game.

Throughout all three IFAF Senior World Championship tournament games, there have been nine shut-out victories with Japan recording four, Mexico two and Germany, Korea and United States with one each.

One of the most impressive shutout victories occurred in 1999 when Japan held Mexico scoreless in the championship game as Japan won the first-ever IFAF Senior World Championship in Italy. In 2007, there were two shutout victories in the game placement games. Germany shutout Sweden in the Bronze medal game while Korea shutout France to claim fifth place.

USA, Germany, Mexico and Japan have allowed the fewest yards in a tournament with the United States impressively only allowing 125 yards in their first appearance in an IFAF Senior World Championship in 2007. Germany and Japan also had strong defenses in 2007 only allowing 134 and 144 yards respectively. In 1999, Mexico only allowed 142 yards.
