2025 CFC25 Small School RANKINGS: Scene is set for semifinals madness in Manitoba and Saskatchewan

TOP HEADLINES

• We begin with an update from Alberta where the government has passed legislation that will force teachers back to the classroom as soon as Wednesday. We will see in the upcoming week what this means for the remainder of the high school football season in Alberta.
• It was a lot closer than they would’ve wanted it to be, but that just makes the taste of victory that much sweeter for Confederation, who defeated Lo-Ellen 31-29 in the Sudbury city finals to claim their first title since 2003. Now they turn their attention to the next stage where they will be taking on Algonquin out of North Bay in the NOSSA regional semifinals to see who earns the right to take on Korah with a spot at OFSAA on the line. When you look at the record books, history isn’t on their side with the last time any team from Sudbury took home the NOSSA title was St. Charles in 1969, but that shouldn’t stop the Chargers from dreaming. Just earning a berth in the finals against Korah would be a monumental achievment for the program who have finally scrapped their way back to the top of Sudbury football.

• No surprises. No upsets. We’ve got the best four 5A programs in Saskatchewan ready to duke it out for provincial glory, and it promises to be one of the best brackets across Canada this season. On one side we’ve got Bishop James Mahoney, who pulled off a tough 23-17 victory over Aden Bowman in the Saskatoon 5A city finals, and now they’ll turn their attention to F.W. Johnson, who breezed through the gauntlet in Regina capping off a flawless campaign with a 49-9 win against Thom in the city finals. On the other side, we’ve got a rural showdown featuring the defending champions Carlton, who once again claimed the North Saskatchewan League title with a dominant 41-12 triumph against St. Mary. They’ll now be tasked with finding a way past Central, who were just as dominant in the South Rural League running the table with an unblemished 8-0 record capped off by a 44-3 blowout victory over Swift Current in the finals. At this point last year, Carlton were seen as the scrappy underdogs who were just happy to be here, but they can’t play that card anymore after taking home only the third provincial championship for a team out of the North Saskatchewan League since 1995. They’re still the “favourites” if you look at the rankings, but they know better than anybody else that you should expect the unexpected in the 5A Saskatchewan Provincial playdowns.

CFC100 CLASS 2026 RANKINGS

• Heading across the border now, we’re also down to the final four fighting for a chance to call themselves the Manitoba AAA champions. In one corner, we’ve got the clubhouse leaders Churchill getting ready to faceoff off against a gritty St. Norbert team, and on the other side we’ve got an all Northwestern Ontario showdown between Fort Frances and Dryden. Unlike the final four in Saskatchewan, all these programs have some history throughout the regular season, which could be an indicator of what’s to come, or just as likely be a red herring. Churchill handled St. Norbert with a 25-9 victory back in week five, while Fort Frances won the first battle with Dryden 17-6 back in week two. Will history repeat itself, or will redemption be the theme of the semifinals?
