2025 CFC50 High School Rankings WEEK 8: St. Thomas More and Bishop Macdonell stake their claims

TOP HEADLINES

  • The Alberta teachers strike has now reached it’s third week, but there does appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel for all the student-athletes effected by the shutdown. The government has stated that they will order the teachers back to work on October 27th if they can not reach an agreement with the Alberta Teachers’ Association. What that means for the Alberta high school football landscape when they do hit the field again is unclear at this stage, but we are hopeful that this means they will be able to salvage the remainder of the season and crown provincial champions in November.

  • It happens every year. We see programs off to hot starts that look like true contenders, but until we can see the evidence with our own eyes, it’s very tough to judge whether it’s a mirage or not. That was the case for Bishop Macdonell this year, who have finally had the chance to prove they are the team to beat in District 10 after a monumental 17-10 victory over the defending champs Centennial to take over first place heading into the playoffs. The bracket is shaping up to be a barn burner with Bishop Macdonell, Centennial and the darkΒ  horse St. James all having the capability to go all the way if the cards fall their way.
  • Sticking with the same theme, we’ve been guilty of overlooking St. Thomas More out in British Columbia despite winning week after week no matter which opponent was on the other sideline. Sometimes you believe a team’s record might be inflated through sheer luck and an easy schedule, but St. Thomas More proved that they are a program to fear heading into the playoffs with a massive 26-21 victory over former top ten ranked Lord Tweedsmuir to improve their overall record to 7-0. But with that said, now that they’ve earned our trust on the rankings, they need stay locked in with two tough matchups against Centennial and New Westminster to closeout the regular season. New Westminster have fallen off the rankings for now simply because they haven’t found a way to win close games when it matters most including their latest 21-19 loss to Centennial, but don’t count out the Hyacks sorting out their issues and making a deep run in the playoffs if they can figure out how to perform when the lights are brightest down the stretch.

  • What can you take from a 3-0 game? That was the final score in Manitoba where St. Paul’s handed Vincent Massey their first loss of the season, but the final really doesn’t instill much confidence in either team. So now you’ve got Dakota, Oak Park, St. Paul’s and Vincent Massey sitting at 6-1 heading into the playoffs, and it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to be celebrating at Princess Auto Stadium in November. Talk about anticipation.
  • Bishop Ryan appear to be the real deal after keeping their winning streak alive with another big 19-3 victory over St. Thomas More. Now they just have to take care of business against their rivals from Newman to complete their flawless regular season campaign, but that’s when things get real with the Celtics still needing to prove they can handle the former top dogs when it matters the most.

  • Robert F. Hall have secured their spot in the ROPSSAA title game after defeating David Suzuki for the second time this season. Now they will have to wait two weeks before they learn if they’ll be playing Suzuki again in the championship, or if they’ll have to navigate a matchup with the defending champs St. Roch.
  • Those are the big reports from this week that had an impact on the rankings, but we promise things are about to get a lot more hectic in our weekly wrap-ups with playoff brackets and races in full swing across the country. It’s do or die time, and there’s nowhere left to hide.
