Lineman Russell takes it to the next level

Football means the world to Tyree, for him, this game is a way to achieve a better life and the chance to strive for a better education.

What made him start playing the game in the first place?

“I started playing because I was at a Toronto Thunder Tyke football game in 2007 when Roberto Allen, also known as Coach Bubba, came up to me and thought I should play some football because of my size. My first year playing, I was terrified and wanted to stay on the bench.”  He goes on to say what he loves about the game, “I love that you get to build a great bond with many people.”

Currently this 6’0 and 242lb DL/OL is playing for the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers, who have a record of 6-4 for the last season. He says, “I feel as if I did well on both sides of the ball as I started both ways.”

In the past Tyree has played for Toronto Thunder, 2015 U-17 Team Ontario (who defeated Team USA) and 2013 OVFL All-Star team.

As a lineman, Russell says what he likes the most about his position is that he can make contact with someone every single play.

“I get to be the closest to the ball, it starts with the linemen, without us, a game cannot be won.” And gameday certainly can’t start until he has had his favorite pre-game meal of Ackee and Saltfish.

During the off-season, Tyree will be working on his strength and speed to stay competitive and make an impact for his team.

In the future, the goal for Tyree is to attend a Division 1 school.

“I will go to whatever school I get the opportunity to get a quality education and play the sport I love.”

He plans to study Sports Management and later on, open his own business.

Tyree’s Mother has influenced him in a way that he knows what it means to be disciplined and focused on a goal. She has played an important role teaching him what it takes to be successful not only in sport but in life.

As for the recruitment process so far, there have been a few schools who have showed some interest and Tyree visited Duquesne University on a visit.

Although he hasn’t committed to any schools to date Tyree is very interested in Penn State.

Tyree has this to say about adjusting to the next level, “I think I will be able to adjust well at the next level as long as I keep working on my craft and get stronger.”
