Saskatchewan jumped out to an early 6-0 halftime lead en route to a 16-0 final against Nova Scotia in game one of the 2013 Football Canada Cup at Monctonβs Rocky Stone Field.
After Saskatchewan opened their second possession at mid-field, a 9-yard completion from quarterbackΒ Jordan Wallsto receiverΒ Yol PiokΒ forced a 3rdΒ and short. After converting on third down, Walls found receiverΒ Jacob Leboccettaon a 25-yard reception to give Saskatchewan a 1stΒ down at the Nova Scotia 10-yard line. Unable to find the end zone, Saskatchewan settled for the field goal to open the scoring at 1:50 of the 1stΒ quarter.
Saskatchewanβs defense held strong on the following series, forcing a Nova Scotia 3-and-out.
Taking over at their own 32-yard line, Saskatchewan utilized their passing attack to march down the field. A first down, 11-yard play action pass to receiverΒ Brady BorsaΒ gave Saskatchewan a new set of downs at their own 45. Walls next found receiverΒ Kohl AideΒ for a 17-yard gain to give Saskatchewan a 1stΒ down at the Nova Scotia 46-yard line. On the following play Nova Scotia recovered a fumble at the end of aΒ Colten KlassenΒ 3-yard run at the Nova Scotia 48-yard line.
Nova Scotia looked to seize the momentum swing however Saskatchewan forced a turnover on a 2ndΒ down sack which resulted in a Saskatchewan fumble recovery.
Saskatchewan quickly capitalized on the turnover. A 15-yard pass toΒ BorsaΒ brought the green and white inside the 10. With their backs up against the goal line Nova Scotiaβs defense held strong. Saskatchewan settled for a secondΒ Scraperfield goal to extend their lead to 6 with 5:32 to play in the second quarter.
After forcing a Saskatchewan punt to open the third quarter, the Nova Scotia offense was forced to punt after 3 penalties stopped the opening 3rdΒ quarter drive in its tracks.
On the first play following the punt, a 42-yardΒ Kayden JohnsonΒ run extended the Saskatchewan lead to 13 following the extra-point.
Nova Scotia came out throwing on their following offensive series attempting to narrow the deficit. Throwing into tight coverage, defensive backΒ Payton HallΒ jumped a route to pick off a Nova Scotia Muir pass.
Taking over at the Nova Scotia 25, Nova Scotia quickly replied with aΒ Jacob MelansonΒ sack. Following a second down incompletion Saskatchewan was forced to punt. A too many men penalty against Nova Scotia gave Saskatchewan a fresh set of downs inside the Nova Scotia red zone. KickerΒ Daniel ScraperΒ added his 3rdΒ field goal on the day to notch Saskatchewanβs final score.
With the win, Saskatchewan moves on to face defending gold medalist Quebec on Thursday July 18 at 7:30 PM (AT) while Nova Scotia will play in the mini-round robin beginning at 11 AM on Thursday.
