For the second consecutive year, Saskatchewan and Quebec met in the Canada Cup semi-finals with Saskatchewan looking to upset two-time defending champion, Quebec who were anxious to step into game action after receiving a first-round bye amongst the 2013 field of seven.
Early on Saskatchewan took advantage of Quebecβs slow start following their 1stΒ round bye.
After aΒ Daniel ScraperΒ punt pinned Quebec at their 8-yard line, aΒ Payton HallΒ pick-6 put Saskatchewan ahead at 8:09 of the 1stΒ quarter.
Saskatchewan looked to continue reeking havoc on defense as linebackerΒ Daniel NesbitΒ intercepted aΒ FrΓ©dΓ©ric Paquette-PerraultΒ pass however an off-sides penalty negated the turnover. The called back turnover was a turning point in the contest as Quebec began to seize back momentum as their drive continued, culminating with a 33-yardWilliam PettersenΒ field goal to put la belle province on the board 6-3.
With 10 seconds to play in the opening quarter, Quebec took the lead and never looked back on aΒ Mathieu Bouchard2-yard quarterback keeper, giving Quebec a 10-6 lead. The score was set-up by a 25-yard quarterback keeper by fellow pivotΒ FrΓ©dΓ©ricΒ Paquette-Perrault.
Backed up on its goal line, Saskatchewanβs defense led by defensive linemanΒ Eric WicijowskiΒ minimized the damage, forcing a 10-yardΒ PettersenΒ field goal which put Quebec ahead 13-6.
On the second play following the field goal, anΒ Adam AuclairΒ 65-yard pick-6 widened Quebecβs lead 20-6.
Quebec continued to pour it on, adding a touchdown fromΒ Paquette-PerrautΒ toΒ Marc-Antoine PivinΒ as well as a thirdΒ PettersenΒ field goal to increase Quebecβs lead 33-6.
Late in the final quarter Saskatchewan linebackerΒ Daniel NesbitΒ intercepted another Quebec pass, atoning for the one that had been called back in the 1stΒ quarter.
AΒ Samuel St MauriceΒ 14-yard touchdown at 1:44 of the 4thΒ quarter marked the gameβs final score giving Quebec a 40-6 win.
With the win Quebec moves on to the gold medal final looking to capture their 3rdΒ consecutive title where they will face Alberta for the 3rdΒ year in a row. The gold medal game takes place on Sunday at 7:30pm (AT). Saskatchewan will face Ontario in the bronze medal game on Sunday at 4pm (AT).
