The countdown begins to CanadaFootballChat.com Ontario Prospect Challenge on the May1st weekend. Β In the days leading up to OPC, CFC will preview the teams, coaches and players participating in the big event.
As a quarterback, Robbie Kemp-Welch has demonstrated his determination to succeed on the field.
βI play quarterback because it is the most exciting position on the field and you can make a difference in the game at any time,β elaborated the 5β4, 170 pound pivot. βI think of myself as determined because I am determined to be the best, I donβt give up, and I am determined to help my team win.β
Moreover, there is one aspect of playing the quarterback position he is most passionate about.
βWhat I like the most about playing quarterback is that it is a game changing position,β explained Kemp-Welch.Β βAll it takes is one play to turn the whole game around and quarterback is a position you can do that from.β
Kemp-Welch already has a wealth of experience on the gridiron.Β Among the teams he has suited up forΒ include both the Metro Toronto Wildcats and the Brampton Bulldogs of the Ontario Minor FootballΒ League (OMFL). Β Currently, he is a member of the Toronto Jr. Argos of the Ontario Football ConferenceΒ (OFC).
βThe best football moment of my career was when my team and I won the OMFL Championship game,βΒ recalled Kemp-Welch of his career.
During an intense gridiron moment or game, Kemp-Welch tries to emulate either one of his two NFLΒ idols β Tom Brady (New England Patriots) and Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers).
βNo matter how much pressure is on them, they are always calm cool and collected,β described theΒ Ontario pivot.Β βI like to model my game after Tom Brady because I love the big moment.β
βIt is the best feeling in the world when you score the game winning touchdown as a quarterback andΒ you can say that you had a big part to play in that touchdown.β
In a couple of weeks, Kemp-Welch will make his entrance onto a bigger stage as he will participate in theΒ Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) as a member of Team Centralβs Underclassmen squad.
βThe decision was easy to try out for OPC because it will increase my exposure to different players,Β coaches and opportunities,β recalled the Team Central quarterback.
One thing that Kemp-Welch has truly enjoyed is the chance to work with the Team Central coachingΒ staff.
βSo far the coaches have been very helpful and once practices start, I am sure they will teach me a lot,βΒ added the standout.
Furthermore, he has soaked in every chance heβs had during the OPC process.
βIt has been a great experience, I have met lots of great people, and I am excited for the practices andΒ the game,β reflected Kemp-Welch.Β Β βMeeting so many great players and being able to play the game
that I love along with them has been the highlight so far.β
While this will be a different gridiron experience from all the others, the Team Central pivotβs focus isΒ solely towards preparation for the main event.
βI like to focus on the game and not the pressure that comes with it,β said Kemp-Welch of hisΒ preparations. βI have been taking personal coaching lessons with Bob Reinford, throwing the ball asΒ much as I can on the weekend, and attending my teams practices.β
Overall, Kemp-Welch is looking forward to the opportunity to see how he stacks up against theΒ competition.
βI am most excited to play with some very talented and competitive players,β expressed the TeamΒ Central quarterback.Β βWhat I am looking forward to most about playing in the OPC is that I am going toΒ be able to compete with some of the best players in the province and it will show up parts of me thatΒ even I did not know I have.β
With OPC as an opportunity to shine while gaining the attention of scouts and recruiters, the Class 2019 quarterbackΒ is more focused on the game itself as well as refining his skills as a player.
βMy personal goals are to develop as a quarterback as much as I can and get better at all aspects of myΒ game,β commented the Team Central standout.
However, he does have some future recruitment goals he would like to achieve in future years.
βI am looking to get a scholarship to the best school I can and be able to play football at the collegiateΒ level,β offered Kemp-Welch. βI would like to earn a scholarship to a university.β
For the moment, he has one objective he wants to succeed in as a quarterback.
βSomething, I would like to achieve in the short term is to develop into the best quarterback I can beΒ and to lead my team to a championship,β expressed Kemp-Welch.
