BLOG: Thursday Sacks (8)

Before we get down to business, I apologize for not having Thursday sacks, the last two weeks. I was busy doing midterms for school. Welcome back. It was the last weekend of the regular season for Canada-West, AUS and RSEQ and it was the start of the OUA playoffs. Here are my picks for which defensive players stood out.

Wilfred Laurier third year defensive lineman, Kwaku Boateng.
Boateng played huge role in Laurier, 29-15 upset win over the defending Yates Cup champions and last season’s Vanier Cup runner-up, McMaster Marauders. Kwaku had four solo tackles and one assist on a tackle for a total of 4.5 tackles. He also had two sacks for a loss of six yards plus he also had a fumble recovery in the win. Laurier could be a dark horse to win the Yates Cup this year.

UBC Thunderbirds third year linebacker, Terrell Davis.
Every week, Davis makes my cut for top defensive performances. He finally feels comfortable in the Thunderbirds defense after two years. Davis was the difference maker in the Thunderbirds huge win over the Manitoba Bisons this weekend. Terrell had six solo tackles along with seven assists for a ground total of 9.5 tackles. He also recovered a fumble in the win. If UBC wants to go far in this year’s Canada West playoffs, Terrell Davis will need step up like he did against the Bisons again.

University of Alberta Golden Bears fourth year defensive back, Steven McCaffrey.
McCaffrey had a solid game against the number one team in the country, Calgary Dinos. The Golden Bears were creamed, 64-28. The only bright spot in the win was the performance given by Steven McCaffrey who had eight solo tackles and one assist on a tackle for a total of 8.5 tackles. He also had interception which was return for seven yards. Unfortunately the Golden Bears did not make the Canada-West playoffs after their hot start to the season.

Montreal Carabins rookie defensive halfback, Jean-Sébastien Bélisle.
He played lights out again saw st a powerful offensive team within Concordia. The Carabins beat the Stingers, 22-17 but it was not an easy game for them. Bélisle had three solo tackles and three assists for a total of 4.5 tackles. Jean- Sébastien also had two sacks for a loss of four yards and as well forced two fumble in the win over the Stingers. He also won RSEQ defense player of the week honors. If the Carabins want to make another deep run in the RSEQ and CIS bowl games, they will have to depend on their defense which last year lead them being called CIS national champions.

Mont Allison Mounties second year defensive lineman, Shaun Robinson.
MTA was stunned last weekend at home by losing to STFX, 24-18.Robinson from MTA had a monster game in the lost. He had six solo tackles and ten assists which equals 11 tackles. He also had one sack which saw the loss of five yards. Robinson had four out of 11 tackles which saw a loss of 11 yards.

Saskatchewan Huskies rookie defensive back, Vince Greco.
Greco had an excellent game against Regina Rams which saw the Huskies win in a close battle,38-37. Greco had three solo tackles and five assists on tackles for a ground total of 5.5 tackles. Greco also had a fumble recovery for a return of 12 yards and interception. Greco on Wednesday was named CIS defensive player of the week on Tuesday.
