TOP HEADLINES
- We start this week out in British Columbia where Vancouver College came out swinging in the first half building a 24-3 lead at the break, which proved to be too much to overcome for Robert Bateman, who fought back valiantly before eventually falling 31-23. It’s a statement win for the Fighting Irish, who are on a mission this year to reclaim their spot as the best program in the province coming off an uncharacteristic 7-4 season with a semifinals loss to the eventual champions Lord Tweedsmuir, and so far it looks like they’ve got the machine running hot again. Just a reminder for anybody who’s forgotten, Vancouver College have been one of the premier programs in the country winning four of the last six AAA provincial titles, and since hiring Bryan Chiu as their head coach, they have gone 49-4 in British Columbia including a 40 game win streak from 2022-2025. Everyone has been trying to topple the purple kingdom coming out of the pandemic, and right now Robert Bateman is still on the outside of the castle looking for a way in.

- We now head to Ontario where we had a shocking result shake up the rankings with Sir Winston Churchill slaying A.N. Myer in a monumental 25-14 victory. While doing the rankings year after year, you just expect certain teams to dominate their local leagues on a yearly basis, and that’s been the case for A.N. Myer dating back to when the Ford twins were roaming around in purple. But there seems to be a power struggle developing in recent years in the Niagara public league with Sir Winston Churchill claiming an unexpected title in 2024, and after falling back into their old pattern last year with the Marauders reclaiming their spot atop the division with ease, all of a sudden the Bulldogs are back in the fight. Now could this be a one off where they caught the Marauders sleeping and all the stars aligned? Absolutely, this is high school football where it feels like anything is possible on the perfect day. Regardless of the circumstances, we can’t underestimate just how much this win means to the Sir Winston Churchill program, who now lead the division at 3-0, and at this point the Marauders are going to have to prove it was a fluke if they get the chance to meet again in the playoffs. Parity breeds competition, so it’s always a good thing for Canadian high school football when new programs make a splash in our weekly rankings.
- St. Joseph also caused a reshuffle of the rankings in Ottawa with a key 14-9 victory over the reigning champions St. Mark. Unlike the Niagara region, the Ottawa league is always highly competitive with multiple programs taking their turn on top throughout the years, so this can’t be classified as a shocking outcome, but it does mean we had to reevaluate the hierarchy. The Jaguars are now 3-0 on the campaign with a non-league victory over La Salle in Kingston to start the year, and then last week they decimated Sacred Heart 54-0 in their league opener. There’s now four teams sitting at 2-0 including Mer-Bleue, St. Matthew and Ashbury College, with the latter gearing up for a matchup against St. Joseph on October 22nd. As always, we’ll be keeping a close eye on Ottawa throughout October to see which teams emerges as the favourites heading into the playoffs.
CFC100 CLASS 2027 RANKINGS
- For everyone who caught the mistake in our Games of the Week post on social media, unfortunately we all struggle to read calendars from time to time. We submit our admission of guilt for missing a very rare cross-province battle in the middle of the season between Raymond and St. Joseph. Last year this probably would’ve been a much closer game, but St. Joseph couldn’t overcome Raymond’s homefield advantage with the Comets blazing their way to a 45-9 victory. Unfortunately after winning the Saskatchewan 5A provincial championship in 2024, and fighting to the very end against Holy Cross last season for the Saskatoon city title, it seems like St. Joseph just don’t have the firepower to keep up this year with their third straight loss against ranked opponents by a combined score of 115-28. On the other side, it’s a fantastic sign that Raymond are continuing to build momentum winning their fifth straight game in Canada after falling 31-7 against Harry Ainlay in their season opener, and if they continue to rise then they could have a massive influence on the 5A provincial playdowns.
- Elsewhere in Alberta we had a classic rivalry showdown between Notre Dame and St. Francis in Calgary. As always these two didn’t disappoint with a low scoring hard fought game that saw Notre Dame come out on top 16-14 to claim sole possession of first place at 4-0. It’s been an interesting year in Cowtown with the reigning provincial champions Ernest Manning currently sitting at 3-1 in league play with a loss to Notre Dame on their record, and St. Francis have a pair of tight losses to Lethbridge C.I. and Raymond in non-league action. You’ve gotta place them all somewhere in the rankings, but there’s Harry Ainlay and Salisbury as the obvious top programs right now in Alberta, and then you’ve got the other five ranked teams with razor thin margins separating them on gameday. Despite a clear top two at the moment, it feels like we could have a magical November in Alberta where anything can happen once the playdowns begin.

- We finish up this week’s headlines with a quick look at the Prairie picture in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that is becoming much more clear than the one in Alberta. Once again, Riffel laid waste to Miller with a decisive 45-10 triumph leaving no doubt about who the top dog in Regina is this year, but the question still remains do they have what it takes to topple the defending champs Holy Cross, who defeated them in their season opener 46-7. Taking a result from week one in the high school season and pretending that’s still the status quo is fool’s gold, so we are intrigued to see what the outcome would be if they meet again in the provincial finals. It’s a similar situation in Manitoba where Oak Park remain in pole position with another decisive 31-16 victory over Vincent Massey, and Dakota are the clear number two after defeating St. Paul’s 31-10. Oak Park showed little signs of struggle in their first matchup against Dakota winning 47-21, but we don’t anticipate it being so easy the second time around if these two meet in the finals again for the third straight year.
