About the Langley Longhorns

The Langley Longhorns Football Club was established to meet the demand for a semi-pro/minor league team in BC after the departure of the Spartans. Now part of the NAFL, the Langley Longhorns are determined to keep their passion for football alive despite significant obstacles for Canadian teams in the league.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative prevents American NAFL teams from playing the Longhorns in Canada, which means that the Longhorns have to play every game on the road. Rather than throwing in the towel, the Longhorns have demonstrated their drive to continue as active members of the NAFL and fully intend to prove they don’t need the home field advantage to win.Click Here for information on how to join the Langley Longhorns Football Club.

The NAFL is an amateur adult football league focused on giving players a chance to play the sport they love and sharpen their skills. The NAFL is also recognized as a developmental league for colleges and the pros and is comprised of nearly 100 teams across North America.

History of the Langley Longhorns
Where did The Langley Longhorns come from?
There seems to be a great deal of desire to know where the Longhorns came from as well as misinformation relating to the clubs inception.

The Langley Longhorns came about out of a concern that there was not going to be a NAFL team based in B.C. for 2009. This concern arose when it was believed that the B.C. Spartans were possibly headed to the anticipated N.L.F.L. Next Level Football League, a professional league which is to commence play this year based in the Pacific Northwest.

When it was felt that the Spartans were seemingly leaving the NAFL, it was felt that there would be no option to play in the NAFL for those players who either would not want to or were not able to progress with the Spartans to the N.L.F.L. At that time current and former members of the Spartans Board of Directors and players came together to form the basis of what is now the Langley Longhorns Football Club with the mandate to, “give the guys a place to play football.”

As were the Spartans, the Longhorns have been set up as a Not-For-Profit organization, not to be confused as a charitable organization. As such there is no person(s) who can directly profit from the club. Directed by a Board of Directors with which decisions are made based on a democratic voting system, always taking into account the opinions of the players as this is all about the players and giving them a place to play. All board members carry one vote.

We understand that there are people who feel it was the Longhorns who lead to the Spartans choosing to not play in 2009, however it was the Spartans who chose to not do so. Efforts were made to see if those who now compose the Longhorns could join with the Spartans and continue on as the Spartans, something which was viable and was close to becoming a reality when a change in the Spartan executive brought that option to a close. The NAFL had the door open to the Spartans and they decided it was not financially viable for 2009 to participate in the NAFL. Instead the Spartans have decided to suspend operations, building to be bigger and stronger for 2010. We wish them well and hope they are a success.
