Acadia hammers X in home opener (stats)

The StFX X-Men football team opened the season with a 43-10 loss to the visiting Acadia Axemen Saturday afternoon at Oland Stadium in front of more than 1,700 fans.

The blue and white scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard pass from Cory Wensley to Justin McLean. Wensley was 20-for-32 for 220 yards, while McLean made four catches for 58 yards. Devon Bailey led the X-Men with eight receptions for 127 yards.

Freshman Ashton Dickson led the X-Men rushing attack with 19 yards on eight carries. Raye Hartmann had an interception for the blue and white.

The Axemen opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 17-yard Ryan Begin field goal. Running back Brett Haenni (13 rushes, 64 yards) stretched the visitors’ advantage to 10-0 on a nine-yard run at 12:15 of the first quarter. Touchdown receptions by AJ Durling and Mike Squires, along with a conceded safety by the X-Men, extended the Axemen advantage to 26-0 midway through the second quarter.

Wensley led the blue and white on their first scoring drive that culminated with a field goal by Anthony Alix at 11:58 of the second quarter, which cut the Axemen lead to 26-3.

Quarterback Kyle Graves (18-for-27, 299 yards) connected with Squires on a second touchdown at 13:48, which gave the Axemen a 33-3 lead heading to the locker room for halftime. Graves, the Subway player of the game, had three touchdown passes.

In the second half, Begin kicked two third-quarter field goals, and a second X-Men conceded safety while pinned deep in their own zone on a punt attempt, gave the Axemen a 41-3 lead. After the McLean touchdown catch, which cut the Axemen lead to 41-10, X-Men kicker Anthony Alix conceded a third safety, providing the Axemen with the 43-10 victory.

The X-Men return to action Saturday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Montreal to face the Concordia Stingers in an Atlantic-Quebec conference interlock game. The next home game for the blue and white is Homecoming Weekend (Saturday, Oct. 1) when they host the Mount Allison Mounties. Game time is 2 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
