Acadia returns 9 AUS all-stars (video interview Jeff Cummins)

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Axemen head into the 2012 season ranked 9th in CIS preseason football Top Ten. With 9 of 12 AUS All-Stars returning this season – seven of which are offensive players – most anticipate that the second highest scoring offense last season will be a threat to opponents this coming season.

Senior pivot Kyle Graves returns for his final lap with the Axemen, following last year’s season where Graves was named the AUS Most Valuable Player for his league leading 232 yards per game average in passing.

CIS All-Canadian receiver Mike Squires, who finished second in AUS receptions per game along with teammate Taylor Renaud who led the AUS in yards per receptions and yards per game,

A strong offensive line returns that includes AUS All-Stars Tyler Honeywood, Colin Murray and Wade Conrad. Only giving up 1.43 sacks per game average last year along with the resurection of an impressive running game led by All-Star running back Zack Skibin, senior Greg Haenni and Zack Clarke.

Defensively, the Axemen lose three key players in the front seven lineup including AUS Lineman of the Year Jake Thomas; Defenisve Player of the Year Tom Labenski and senior tackle Andrew Fraser. However the return of outside linebacker Ed McNally and defensive back Cameron Wade, who both missed the CIS Uteck Bowl against McMaster, return to bolster a young and physical defense.

Up front the defensive line will be anchored by senior end Jerrett Laycock and book ended by AUS
All-Star John Wilson.

Head coach Jeff Cummins, who captured the honour as the CIS coach of the year last season, is looking forward to this season. β€œThe season ended last year with an explosive offense and a physical defense, so we are optimistic this season will bring the same”. Preseason Interview with Jeff Cummins
