Acadia’s Squires and Thomas, StFX’s Catterall named Week 7 AUS Football Players of the Week


October 25, 2011 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Acadia receiver Mike Squires, Acadia defensive lineman Jake Thomas and StFX’s Jordan Catterall have been named the Week 7 AUS Football Players of the Week for their play during the period ending October 23rd, 2011.

Receiver Michael Squires of the CIS No. 9-ranked Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending October 23rd, 2011. Squires, a fourth-year player from Halifax, N.S., tied the Atlantic conference record for touchdown receptions in a single game with four this past weekend as the Axemen clinched first place and home-field advantage for the Subway Loney Bowl with a 41-28 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Michael, who finished with eight catches for 166 yards on the day, opened the scoring at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter with a 49-yard strike from Kyle Graves and added TD receptions of 15, five and nine yards in the second, third and fourth quarters respectively. Squires currently leads the conference in touchdowns scored (7) and has a team-high 30 catches in seven games this season.

Acadia defensive lineman Jake Thomas is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 23rd, 2011. Thomas, a fourth-year defensive lineman from Douglas, N.B., recorded 5.0 tackles, four of which were for combined losses of 33 yards, including two sacks in Saturday’s 41-28 home victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Jake, who leads the Atlantic conference with 8.0 sacks and 13.0 tackles for a loss this season, also forced a fumble and was credited with a quarterback hurry in the win. With the two sacks this past weekend, Thomas now has 16.5 in his four-year career at Acadia, good enough for third place in the AUS record book*.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Receiver and punt returner Jordan Catterall of the StFX X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Catterall, a second-year student from Oakville, Ont., returned a missed field goal 114-yards for a touchdown with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter this past weekend in the X-Men’s 42-41 double overtime win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, N.B. The missed field goal return is the third longest in school history. Jordan also returned four punts for 41 yards and two kickoffs for 17 yards in the victory, and added five pass receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, giving him a combined 298 all-purpose yards on the day.
