Acadia University Football program announces 2010 committed recruits

WOLFVILLE, NS – Acadia University football head coach Jeff Cummins is pleased to announce the recruiting class of 2010 that include 30 of Canada’s top football recruits from coast to coast.

Cummins is proud of this year’s list that he along with his staff have worked very hard to fill the vacancies left behind by graduation. “I think this group will prove to be one of the best classes we have seen in the last 5 years and there are a number of guys that should contribute to wins on the field right away. I traveled West through New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta during the winter months and had a chance to meet up with prospective players and their coaches. The face to face time I had on the road had a huge impact in bringing players across the country to Acadia”.

This year’s class of 30 recruits is highlighted by six athletes including three linemen.

Kirby Fletcher of Peace River, Alta., tops this year’s recruiting class. As a two-way starter at tackle and nose tackle on the defensive line, Fletcher recently played in the Senior Bowl for Football Alberta, where his North team was victorious. At 6’3 and 285 pounds, Kirby has the physicality needed to make an immediate impact with the Axemen on the defensive line.

Cummins hopes that University of Toronto transfer Shaun Feasby will fill any void that remains after the graduation of several starting offensive linemen. After one season as a starter on the offensive line with the University of Toronto in 2008, the Uxbridge, Ont. native hopes to bring size and experience to the offensive line this season with his “road-grading” type of lineman play.

From Grand Prairie, Alta., Travis Miller, a veteran starter with the Okanagan Sun of the CJFL at Centre will bring his game experience and leadership to young offensive line. Voted as the top offensive lineman for the Sun in 2009, Cummins expects Travis to make an immediate impact in fall.

The defensive until will get more help from the additions of Jordan Michalow of Edmonton, Alta. and J.P. Bowie of Riverview, N.B..

Michalow, a defensive halfback and return specialist contributed on both sides of the ball for Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton where he was the 2006 Offensive Most Valuable Player and the 2007 Defensive Most Valuable Player. In 2009, Jordan played for the Edmonton Huskies of the Prairie Football Conference.

Atlantic Canada product J.P. Bowie will add some punch to the linebackers. Bowie, a versatile two-way player, was voted as an All-League Running back in 2008 and also named as the 2009 Player of the Year in the Eastern Conference of New Brunswick as a linebacker for Riverview High School. J.P. will be play on the defensive side of the ball as a linebacker for Acadia and hopes to continue the succession of past New Brunswick Most Valuable Players, who have chosen Acadia as a destination of choice.

Vermont’s Cooper Wile will cross our southern border to help the Axemen in the running back position. From South Burlington, Vt., Cooper was a first-team All-Division I selection despite playing only half the season. Wile was also selected to represent the state of Vermont in the Maple Sugar Bowl versus New Hampshire. Cooper’s ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and his returning abilities make him a valuable addition to the Axemen roster.

Rounding out the top six recruits is running back Evan Petrie from Burlington, Ont., who also is expected to help on special teams with his returning abilities. As a tailback for Nelson High School in Burlington, Petrie also played for the Mississauga Warriors and the Halton Cowboys of the OVFL. A quick, elusive runner and returner, Evan is expected to play and contribute in 2010.
