SACKVILLE, NB – The Acadia Axeman defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 26-19 at MacAulay Field in Sackville on Saturday, in front of nearly 1500 spectators.
The hometown crowd was feeling good at the half as Mount Allison stormed out to an 18-1 halftime lead but Acadia used two big plays in the 2nd half to complete the comeback and finish on top. With the win, Acadia moves into sole possession of 1st place in the AUS at 3-2, while Mount Allison falls to 2-3. The Mounties sit tied in 2nd place tie with Saint Mary’s.
Mount Allison opened the scoring only 3 minutes into the game when John Szilagyi scored a 39 yard field goal. Two minutes later a great catch by receiver Jarrett King brought the Mounties to the Acadia 2-yard line. On the next play, Alonzo Howell rushed for the touchdown, leaving the score at 10-0 Mount Allison.
Mounties scored again before the end of the 1st quarter when Jake Hotchkiss hooked up with Adam Molnar in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard score. On the ensuing kickoff, with a strong wind at his back, Szilagyi kicked the ball through the Acadia end zone, giving Mount Allison another single point and an 18-0 lead. One minute and 18 seconds into the 2nd quarter, Acadia kicker Matt Archibald missed a field goal, leading to a rouge and single point for Acadia.
Acadia started to gain momentum half way through the 3rd quarter when quarterback Kyle Graves through a lateral to receiver Stu Clow. Clow then returned the ball to Graves who took off for the sidelines and ran 61 yards for the touchdown. Mount Allison got another rouge, making the score 19-8, then with thee minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, Acadia’s Naija Coley returned a punt 91 yards to bring the Axeman within four points.
Acadia took the lead for the first time when Kyle Graves hooked up with Stu Clow for an 18-yard score 4 minutes into the 4th quarter, giving Acadia a 22-19 lead. Acadia added to their lead when Matt Archibald kicked a 33-yard field goal with just over 5 minutes to play, putting the score at 25-19. A rouge for Acadia made the score 26-19 with just over 2 minutes to play.
Acadia failed to get their punt away with only 13 seconds remaining, giving Mount Allison one last shot from the Acadia 40-yard line. With no time left on the clock Jake Hotchkiss through to the end zone but the ball was deflected away.
The two teams will complete the back half of their home-and-home when Mount Allison visits Acadia next Saturday, October 16th at 2PM.
