The team takes the field on Saturday at 9 to 11 a.m. at the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place (MacAdam Field) and in the afternoon there will be a fitness testing combine at the Stratford Indoor Complex from 4 to 6 p.m. On Sunday morning the team will be back at UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place from 9 to 11 a.m., and then in the gymnasium of the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be daily sessions throughout the rest of the week. Players will be advised of the schedule on the weekend. Players are reminded that a $100 AFL registration fee is required to participate.
Last year the Hurricanes had a successful season, winning all but one of their regular season games, and then sweeping through the play-offs to grab the championship. The team had an impressive line-up of players, including some real crowd-pleasers.
The 2012 team will have a different look. Gone from this yearβs roster will be two-time MVP Demetrius Ferguson, who is now in camp with the St. F.X. X-men, and two-time defensive MVP Marcus Dunphy, who is joining the Hurricanes in a coaching capacity following a CFL tryout. Also gone are the teamβs top lineman Owen MacWilliams, now in camp with the Laurier Golden Hawks, and the leagueβs leading rusher Dave Clark. Early indications are, however, that the team has reloaded with some outstanding recruits for the new season.
βWe have a strong core of returning players and a great crop of prospects, which will make for a very competitive training camp,β said head coach Mark MacDougall. βEnthusiasm is high among the players and the coaches. We canβt wait to get back into football.β
Once camp is underway, more details will be released concerning the make-up of this yearβs team. The pre-season buzz around town is that the team looks to be at least as strong as last year.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
