AFL: HURRICANES LOSE CLOSE ONE TO EAGLES

The Holland College Hurricanes were defeated 24-20 by the Husson University JV Eagles in a football game played in Bangor, Maine, on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles led 7-0 after the first quarter and 17-12 at the half. The Hurricanes scored two touchdowns in the second quarter as Nick Hunsley connected with Robbie Tufts on a nine-yard pass and with Phil Lanthier on a seven-yarder. Both convert attempts were blocked.

In the third quarter, Holland College was able to establish its ground game with strong running from Dave Clark, Vincenzo DeSciscio and Nick Hunsley. Late in the quarter, the Hurricanes went ahead for the first time when Hunsley hooked up with Luke Williams, who muscled it into the end zone. A two-point conversion made it 20-17 for the visitors.

The Hurricanes threatened again in the third, but an Eagles interception on their own 15 ended the drive.

On the defensive side of the ball, J.P. O’Connell dominated the line, especially in the second half.

With the Hurricanes seemingly in control, the game turned around on a Holland College fumble and a facemask call. The Eagles capitalized, connecting on a picture-perfect passing play that covered 40 yards for a score.

Backin the lead, Husson killed a Holland College drive late in the quarter and took over on downs. Time became the enemy and with no timeouts left, the Hurricanes did not get another chance to snatch a win on their first-ever U.S. road trip. Final score was 24-20.

The APM Construction Services offensive player of the game was Nick Hunsley, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 186 yards and 3 TDs. Defensive honours were shared by J.P. O’Connell and Ryan Adams. The former teammates from Northeast Metro Tech High in Wakefield, Mass., played a strong game in front of friends and family members who were on hand to cheer on the Hurricanes.

Holland College returns to Atlantic Football League action next Saturday afternoon in Halifax against the Dalhousie University Tigers.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
