Alberta Golden Bears open 2013 Spring Camp Thursday

The University of Alberta Golden Bears’ football program will open their first Spring Camp under the direction of Head Coach Chris Morris on Thursday, April 25th and conclude the annual camp on Sunday April 28th with a scrimmage.  All on-field activities will be held on the turf at Foote Field.

Beginning on Thursday, 127 football players, including 55 returning Golden Bears, will make their case for one of the 85 roster spots available.

“This camp, more than anything, is about competition,” said Morris, who was a CIS All-Canadian offensive lineman before going on to win three Grey Cups in the CFL. “We want guys competing every single minute that they’re with us this week. There are a lot of great players coming in and a lot of great players already here, but there are only 85 spots available and competition will determine who gets a spot.”

Quarterbacks Curtis Dell and Ryan Schwartz are among the returnees, along with big play receiver Ryley Richardson, defensive linemen Steven Giang, Greg Severin, and Jon Paradis, linebackers Tyler Greenslade, Connor Ralph and Josh MacDougall, and defensive back Jon Mora.

The Bears will be on the field from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday this week, as well as 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up with the Green and Gold scrimmage on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“In football, more so than in any other sport, the number of players you have competing with every ounce of their being will determine your success or failure as a team,” noted Morris. “We are building a foundation of Golden Bears around the kinds of players who approach competition with a relentless and physical mindset; young men who have a will to win.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
