Alberta High School Senior Bowl Weekend

They’ve gone to battle for each other and won city and provincial championships on the high school gridiron.

And this weekend, four of Notre Dame high school’s Grade 12 football standouts will get one last chance to compete together before they head off in separate directions in the fall.

Pride running back Omohiefe Ogolo, defensive backs Brett Dionello and Mitch Koch, and wide receiver David Finot will suit up for the South squad at Monday’s 21st annual Senior Bowl high school football all-star game at Edmonton’s Foote Field.

“I’m sure it’ll be a great experience,” said Finot, who’ll suit up for the junior Calgary Colts this season. “I’m actually excited for it. My friends were there last year and it looked like a really fun game.

“It’ll be our last chance to represent our school and to be with all the guys.”

Fresh off a 2008 Tier II Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association title, the Pride stormed into the 2009 Calgary Senior High School Athletic scene this year and posted an unblemished 7-0 record in Division 1.

They beat Bishop O’Byrne 31-8 for the city crown, only to lose 37-0 in the provincial semifinal to the eventual Alberta champion Raymond Comets.

Long removed from that sting, however, the Notre Dame foursome was thrilled when they made it past Football Alberta’s two selection camps last month.

They were picked for the 41-member team which is made up of players from Calgary and area high schools, including Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, High River, Raymond, Brooks, and Medicine Hat.

“I’m really excited,” said Ogolo, who was an impact player during the Pride’s 2009 playoff run and hopes to crack the University of Alberta Golden Bears roster in 2010. “It’ll be lots of fun but lots of competition, as well. I’m looking forward to seeing how we stack up against the best players in Alberta.

“It’s kind of sad (that they are graduating) but it’ll be good to play one last time together.”

The weekend-long event begins today and Saturday with practices and meetings while awards will be given out Sunday.

The game kicks off at noon on Monday.
