Alberta prepares to host the U-18 Football Canada Cup

OTTAWA, June 20, 2011 – The 2011 Football Canada Cup is set to take place July 9- 15 at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium. This event showcases the best under-18 Football players from across Canada featuring the top high school and midget football players.

The event has grown in recent years as for the second straight year the tournament’s provincial entries include two teams from Ontario, and one team each from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Québec and Nova Scotia. Teams will be comprised of forty players, chosen from selection camps held in each province.

The tournament consists of three games within a six day span. Each team plays two preliminary games followed by a final third and deciding game. Ultimately, the two undefeated teams will play for the title of national champion.

“Alberta is thrilled to be able to host this event for the third time. As the most consistent participant over the years our teams have enjoyed the experience every time and it will be a pleasure to host all of the other provinces in the heartland of high school football – Lethbridge, Alberta,” said Football Alberta Technical Director and Host Organizing Committee Operations Director, Tim Enger.

The Football Canada Cup was established in 1995 as an under-19 National Tackle Football Championship with the addition of the under-17 Championship, created in 2004. In accordance with the Long Term Athlete Development Model and growth of football across the country the championship has shifted its focus to a new age category to support the player development that is taking place within the provinces. The 2010 National under provinces were represented at one time in one division.

Last year’s event was hosted by Football Nova Scotia in Wolfville at Raymond field on the Acadia
University campus. 2010 marked the return of both British Columbia and Nova Scotia into the
tournament with B.C. having last played in the Canada Cup in 2000 while Nova Scotia last participated in 2004. Saskatchewan rallied late in the fourth quarter to become the U-18 champion, defeating Quebec by a score of 18-10. British Columbia won the bronze by defeating host Nova Scotia.
