Amazing opportunity

Hamilton defensive lineman hopes OUA team will lead him to Vanier Cup

Liam McCowell’s dream is to win the Vanier Cup.

The 6’2, 240 pound defensive lineman from Hamilton, Ontario believes that the Ottawa Gee-Gees are the team that will help him achieve this goal.Β  Recently, McCowell committed to the OUA team for the 2014 season.

β€œSome time after that I was contacted by Coach (Jamie) Barresi from Ottawa and was invited to visit the school and the Facility,” recalls McCowell.Β  β€œIt really meant a lot to me that they would be willing to take a chance and recruit me despite my injury.”

β€œNot to mention the fact that I was extremely impressed by the atmosphere of the team, the city and the school itself. My whole life, I have wanted to become a police officer and the University of Ottawa offers an exceptional program for criminology.Β  It has been a dream of mine to win a Vanier Cup and I truly believe that I can accomplish that dream with this amazing opportunity.”

McCowell joins the Gee-Gees after a five year stint with the Cardinal Newman Cardinals of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association (HWCAA).Β  As captain of the team in 2013, the defensive lineman recorded eight sacks in five games; however, his regular season took an unexpected turn as he sustained a torn ACL, MCL, Meniscus as well as a chipped Tibia.
