Angel retirement

LFL: Β Canada superstar Manou not suiting up for 2013 season

With the weekend of September 2013 signifying the start of LFL Canada’s second stellar campaign, it comes as a great surprise to fans throughout the league to see that BC Angels superstar Stephanie Manou shall not return. As BC also has a new coaching staff, any effort in claiming a second consecutive title shall be well earned.

The dynamic and exciting running back once played rugby and was a dancer for the CFL’s BC Lions. Not only did she emerge as a fan favorite during the BC Angels 2012 season, she was also one of the faces of LFL Canada.

The first-ever rushing champion in LFL Canada history, Manou anchored the rushing attack for the Angels. While her greatest legacy may have come in scoring the first-ever touchdown in LFL Canada history, she would also help the Angels win LFL Canada’s inaugural championship.

Statistically, her 2012 season was nothing short of spectacular. Her 337 yards constituted an astounding 87 percent of the Angels running game. In averaging 6.9 yards per carry and 84.3 yards per game, she accumulated a team-high five touchdowns.

Although Manou’s talent and athleticism could have made her the first Canadian to compete in LFL US, fans can only wonder what may have happened. Along with other Canadian-born stars like Katie Marshall and Kylie Rossler, Manou was helping to solidify the role of Canadian talent in LFL Canada (as every franchise featured a few stars from LFL US).

As the Angels look to the future by naming Deanna Schaper-Kotter (who holds a background in lacrosse and volleyball) as the new running back, she will have big shoes to fill. While it will be impossible to replace Manou, Schaper-Kotter’s role is playing error-free football and that will help ease the impact of her loss.

Despite Manou’s unexpected retirement from the sport, her efforts in 2012 helped to establish a solid fan-base in Western Canada. From the fans to her teammates, they certainly benefited from her presence and for that, the fans owe her a debt of gratitude.
