Axemen improve to 2-1 with win over X-Men

September 25, 2010 (WOLFVILLE, N.S.) – The Acadia Axemen improved to 2-1 and grabbed a share of first place with a 24-11 win over the winless StFX X-Men Saturday night in front of 1,236 fans at Raymond Field in Wolfville, N.S.

Second year pivot Kyle Graves completed 21-of-33 attempts for 254 yards in the air as the Axemen racked up 384 net yards to the X-Men’s 263 yards.

Subway Player of the Game, Stu Clow, had a game-high nine receptions for 114 yards, while teammate Mike Squires – a University of Waterloo transfer – scored Acadia’s first touchdown in the opening five minutes of the second quarter.

A team rouge, the Squires major and a Matt Archibald 23-yard field goal gave the Axemen an 11-1 lead at the half. Archibald was also good from 25 yards out to push the lead to 14-1 at the 5:57 mark of the third.

StFX kicker Anthony Alix drove home a 30-yard field goal to close the gap to seven points late in the third frame to leave the X-Men in striking distance, but a 45-yard punt single by Kyle Graves gave Acadia a 15-4 edge heading into the final quarter.

X-Men receiver Devon Bailey’s 35 yard reception to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive closed the Acadia lead to 15-11 at 2:09 of the fourth quarter.

A Jerrett Laycock interception on the StFX 42-yard line, led to Acadia’s second touchdown of the night as second year tailback Brett Haenni drove to the end zone on a 10 yard run to finish a five play, 49 yard drive following the interception.

The Axemen added a safety late in the final quarter to solidify the win over the X-Men, who drop to 0-3 on the season.

The air attack by StFX accounted for 255 yards on 22 tosses by quarterback Corey Wensley, but Acadia nullified the X-Men ground attack, allowing just 45 net yards rushing. Acadia’s Brett Haenni added 69 yards rushing on 14 carries while quarterback Kyle Graves added 54 more yards to an Acadia ground game total of 134 net yards for the game.

Pressure on StFX’s Wensley came from Acadia linebackers Tom Labenski and Ed McNally, who recorded 2.0 and 1.5 sacks respectively. Labenski led the Axemen with seven solo tackles and five assisted tackles.

The Axemen now head to Halifax Friday night to take on the 0-3 Saint Mary’s Huskies. This Friday night’s game will be the second of three matchups between the Axemen and Huskies this season, while the 2-1 Mounties head to Antigonish to take on the X-Men.
