BC finals recap: Rams & Devils complete dominating seasons

Sr. AAA – Mt. Douglas Rams def. Vancouver College Fighting Irish 51-14

 

One year ago the Mt. Douglas Rams needed to stage a furious second-half comeback in order to capture their first-ever Frank Gnup Memorial Trophy.

They had no such need for a dramatic ending this year.

The Rams turned the Sr. AAA championship game into a laugher early jumping out to a 37-7 half-time lead before coasting to a 51-14 victory to capture their second straight title after becoming the first-ever Island team to win the Sr. AAA championship last season.

The Fighting Irish had little response to the Rams’ running game as Mt. Douglas – led by star running backs Marcus Davis and Mason Swift – just continued to attack on the ground for the majority of night.

The Irish’s own offence, on the other hand, found very little cracks in the Rams’ armour and really managed just one major score when there was still some doubt left in the game.

The Rams became the first school to win back-to-back Sr. AAA championships since the St. Thomas More Knights did so back in 1999 and 2000.

Sr. AA – South Delta Sun Devils def. Mission Roadrunners 31-14

Making their first trip to the Sr. AA final since 2008, the South Delta Sun Devils made sure they didn’t squander the opportunity to reclaim the Gary Scott Memorial Trophy scoring a decisive 31-14 win over the defending champion Mission Roadrunners.

The Sun Devils burst out of the gate offensively putting up the first 11 points but then hit a rut as they watched the Roadrunners claw all the way back to claim a 14-11 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Sun Devils, however, were undaunted as they answered right back scoring 20 unanswered points to close out the contest to capture their school’s second-ever Sr. AA championship to go with the title they won back in 2008.

Jr. AAA – Terry Fox Ravens def. St. Thomas More Knights 14-7

Somewhere Carey Lapa is looking down and smiling.

The Carey Lapa Memorial Trophy, named after the popular former coach of the junior varsity Ravens who passed away in January 2011, now belongs to the program Lapa helped build after the Ravens captured the title with a 14-7 win over the St. Thomas More Knights in the Jr. AAA championship tilt.

The Ravens jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and before the Knights cut the gap in half before the end of half-time but that was all she wrote as far as scoring was concerned as the Ravens allowed their defence to take care of the rest in the second half.

The junior championship is the third for the Ravens in school history and their first since winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007,

The defending champion Knights were making their fourth trip to the final in the last five years but, following Saturday’s loss, still has just one championship to show for it.

Jr. AA – Mission Roadrunners def. Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers 22-8

The Mission Roadrunners tallied 14 unanswered points in the second half of the Jr. AA Varsity title game to secure their school’s second championship in the last three seasons with a 22-8 win over the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers.

With the score deadlocked at 8-8 at half-time, the Roadrunners scored a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to pick up the win.

Mission managed to pull away after an injury late in the third quarter forced Abbotsford’s quarterback/linebacker Grayson Marquardt out of the game. The Panthers never seemed managed to get back on track offensively after that.

Grade 8 AAA: G.W. Graham Grizzlies vs Notre Dame Jugglers def. G.W. Graham Grizzlies 28-26

For the first time in 25 years, the Notre Dame Jugglers can call themselves the Quadra Cup champions after knocking off the upstart Grizzlies by a 28-26 score to win the Grade 8 title.

After a tight first half that saw the Jugglers hold a slim 14-12 lead, Notre Dame pulled away in the second half building up a 28-18 lead in the final quarter before hanging on for the slim two-point win.

Notre Dame’s victory ended the Cinderella run for the first-year Grizzlies who made it to the Grade 8 AAA final game against all odds.

The Grizzlies finished as the top seed in the AA division and upset Vancouver College and St. Thomas More en route to the final.

Grade 8 AA: H.D. Stafford Skyhawks def. Eugene Reimer Ravens 21-0

In the Grade 8 AA championship played between the H.D. Stafford Skyhawks and the Eugene Reimer Ravens last Thursday at Burnaby Lakes Sports Complex, the Skyhawks earned their second consecutive Tier 2 championship by shutting out the Ravens by a score of 21-0.

Tier 2 AA: Frank Hurt Hornets def. GP Vanier Towhees 34-18

The Frank Hurt Hornets captured their second Tier 2 championship in three years after knocking off the GP Vanier Towhees two Saturdays ago at UBC Thunderbird Stadium by a 34-18 score.
