BC: Games to keep an eye on this weekend (Oct. 16-18)

The title game in the BC Football Conference pitting the two-time defending national junior champions Vancouver Island Raiders up against the Okanagan Sun highlights the list of football action involving local BC teams this weekend.

BC Junior Football
And then there were two.
It’s only fitting that the two top teams in the BCFC get to duel it out this Sunday, October 17 for the BCFC’s Cullen Cup Championship at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.
The Vancouver Island Raiders, the two-time defending CJFL champions, look to take another step towards becoming three-peat national champions by securing their fifth straight BCFC title. The Raiders earned their win to Sunday’s championship showcase after pummeling the South Surrey Rams in last weekend’s semi-final by a 46-10 score.
Standing in the Raiders way are the Okanagan Sun, who last captured the Cullen Cup in 2004. The Sun didn’t exactly have an easy road to Sunday’s championship after just squeaking by the Victoria Rebels last weekend with a 30-20 victory. The Sun have the numbers on their side in this match-up. They are a perfect 6-0 this season (including playoffs) on home turf which included a 27-19 victory over the Raiders back on August 7. The winner of the Cullen Cup will host the CJFL’s Intergold game versus the champions of the Ontario Football Conference on either October 30 or 31. The winner of that subsequent game will advance to the national championship facing the champion of the Prairie Football Conference on November 13.
Advanced tickets are available for just $15. Tickets at the gate on game day are $20. Order your advanced tickets now by calling 250-762-5050. For more information, please visit www.okanagansun.ca.

University Football

The reeling UBC Thunderbirds (1-4), who dropped a 27-20 decision to their cross-town rivals SFU Clan last Friday at the 33rd Shrum Bowl, will try to right the ship this Saturday, October 16 in Edmonton when they face the Alberta Golden Bears (2-3). The T-Birds currently sit at the bottom of the Canada West standings tied with the Manitoba Bisons. With just three regular season games remaining on their schedule including Saturday’s tilt with the Golden Bears, the T-Birds will likely have to run the table to have any chance at qualifying for a post-season berth.

The SFU Clan, fresh off their Shrum Bowl victory, will get an additional week off to enjoy the win as they have a bye this weekend. They return to action on October 23 when they travel to Utah to face Dixie State.
