BC high schooler Wandell to play in IFAF USA vs World game in Texas

Congratulations to New Westminster Secondary School grad Jamie Wandell (#77), who was just added to the World Team roster, to take on the USA Under-19 team in Austin, Texas on February 2nd. Wandell was one of three additional selections made by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). The current 42-man World Team roster includes 22 Canadian players.

Wandell, a 6’4”, 300 lb, offensive lineman from New Westminster HS, was recently selected to the BC AAA Provincial All-star team and was rated as the number one offensive lineman in BC. He was a 2-year starter for a team that was ranked number one in BC for much of 2009 and reached the playoffs for the 4th straight year in 2010. Wandell is being recruited by universities in Canada and the US.

β€œIt is truly an honor to take part in an event like this,” said Wandell. β€œI’m looking forward playing with and against players of such a high caliber and to getting to know some people from around the world.
It will be a memorable experience and I’m looking forward to representing Canada and the BCSSFA.”

The 2011 World Team roster is comprised of players representing American Samoa (3), Austria (5), Canada (22), Finland (2), Germany (3), Japan (2), Mexico (2) and Sweden (3). They will practice in Austin from January 28 to February 1. Team USA is recognized as a U.S. National Team and will feature players from 21 states.

β€œJamie is an outstanding offensive lineman with the size, athleticism and experience to excel at this level,” said World Team and University of Western Ontario Head Coach, Greg Marshall. β€œI was very impressed with his technique and footwork. For the World Team to be successful we must be able to control the line of scrimmage and Jamie will help us accomplish that.”

Wamdell is one of 5 Canadian players currently still in high school, as the bulk of the roster consists of first-year university players. One other BCSSFA grad, Matthias Goossen (Van College/SFU), will also be participating, after playing university football this past season. Alex Anthony (Mt Douglas/Wilfred Laurier) was also selected to take part, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

This is the 2nd selection to an international event in as many months for Wandell, who recently participated in the NUC All-World Gridiron Classic, Dec 31st at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He was one of 4 Canadians who took part in that game, which featured over 100 players who had received NCAA Div 1 scholarship offers.

The Team USA vs The World series kicked off in January 2010 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Team USA earned a 17-0 victory. The second annual game will kickoff at 7:30 pm CT.
