OFFENCE

Jake Laberge / QB / VI Raiders

The VI Raiders found themselves in a big, big hold Saturday afternoon down 34-7 to the Langley Rams with 13 minutes to play in Nanaimo. 4 straight scoring drives later and the home side walked away with a 35-34 victory.

While the QB (in this case 3^rd year starter Jake Laberge) is logically the engineer of such a comeback, what was lost to many observers who were understandably applauding the comeback was just how key Laberge’s performance was. Combined rushing and passing Jake contributed 343 of the Raiders 411 offensive yards and all 5 of the club’s touchdowns (3 passing & 2 rushing).

Combine those numbers with the near impossible comeback and Laberge had an afternoon that is likely as good as any in the long history of BC junior football.

DEFENCE

Simon Winsnes / DB / Valley Huskers

4 tackles / 1 batted ball / 1 Fumble recovery / 1 interception (50-yard TD return)

The upstart Valley Huskers continue to shake things up in the BCFC. While the club was winless in 31 games going into the season, they are now atop the conference with a 2-1 record following a 22-18 over an Okanagan Sun club the Huskers franchise had not beaten in its 20- year history.

Winsnes’ 3^rd quarter interception that he returned for a 50 yard TD to give his club a 22-14 lead was arguably the play of the game for the Huskers and will no doubt hold up as one of the key defensive plays of the season when all is said and done.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Maximillian Joseph / Returner / Langley Rams

4 punt returns 54 yards / 3 kick returns 63 yards

 

When Maximillian Joseph joined the Langley Rams after a rookie season with the Kamloops Broncos in 2017, the Rams felt they had landed the player who would ultimately be named the conference special team player of the year by seasons end.

Joseph is proving the Rams right as he picked up right where he left off after a strong 2017 season. Saturday afternoon his solid returns provided good field position for the Rams offense, to which he also contributed another 79 yards as well.
