BC: Must See Football this weekend in minor, high school & junior (Oct 20) video

VMFL

The match-up to watch in the VMFL’s Midget Division this weekend takes place on Sunday, October 23 at South Surrey Field when the Langley Stampeders (5-2) clash with the White Rock Titans (7-0). Kickoff is at 1:45 pm.

While White Rock sits alone on top of the division having gone undefeated all year thanks in part to their potent offense, they can’t look past the Stampeders who have won four straight to move themselves into a tie for third place. With recent wins over Vancouver, Cloverdale, Chilliwack and Cowichan, the Stampeders know a win this weekend could solidify their spot in the top-four and give the team a bye in the first week of the Provincial playoffs.

For the Titans, a win would give them a solid shot at a perfect 10-0 season with only the North Surrey Bears standing in their way with a Week 10 match-up.

Another key game to keep an eye on in the VMFL comes from the Atom division when the Richmond Raiders (7-0) visit Bear Creek Park in Surrey on Sunday to battle the North Surrey Lions (6-1). Kickoff is at 11:45 am.

The Atom division is the most competitive of all the VMFL divisions with 17 teams vying for one of those top-eight playoff spots. The Raiders enter Week 8 undefeated and will face a Lions team that is only one game back of first place. A win for the Lions would go a long way to securing a home field game for the first round of the playoffs and maybe a shot at first overall. For the Raiders, they need a win this weekend to keep pace with the Cloverdale Panthers who are also 7-0 on the season.

VCFL

Samuel Robertson Technical School will host this week’s key game in the VCFL this Saturday, October 22 featuring an Atom Division clash between Mission and the Meadow Ridge Gold with first place on the line. Kickoff is at 11 am.

The Atom division clash is one of four games that SRT will be hosting that day. Other contests include Mission Pee Wee versus Meadow Ridge Gold Pee Wee (12:45 pm), North Langley Bantam versus Meadow Ridge Bantam (2:30 pm) and Richmond Midget versus Meadow Ridge Midget (4:30 pm).

It has been a tremendous season for the Kelowna Lions and their Pee Wee and Junior Bantam teams, respectively, and they will look to continue their red hot season this Sunday, October 23 with an all-Kelowna showdown at the CNC Turf Field.

The day’s action kicks off at Noon when the Pee Wee Lions (6-0) will battle the Pee Wee Kelowna Dragons (3-3-1). The Lions pounded the Dragons by a 46-0 back on September 4 so you can bet the Dragons have revenge on their minds.

At 2 pm, the Junior Bantam Lions (6-0) will take on the Junior Bantam Dragons (4-3). These two teams also met back on September 4 with the Lions scoring a convincing 48-8 victory that afternoon.

BC High School Football

This week’s marquee match-up in the BCSSFA figures to be a barn-burner when the defending AAA Varsity champions, Vancouver College Fighting Irish, host the Mt. Douglas Rams at O’Hagen Field at Vancouver College on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1:30 pm. If you can’t make it out to the game in person, you can watch it live online at sportscanada.tv.

Both the Irish and Rams are off to strong starts this season coming into this game with perfect 2-0 records, respectively. The perfect season will be over for one of these teams by Saturday afternoon, however.

This contest will also feature one of the most dominating defences versus one of the most potent offences. The Rams have scored 98 points in their two outings while the Irish have yielded only eight combined points in their two games played.

And then there were two.

At the outset of the season, it would have surprised nobody if you told them the Vancouver Island Raiders would once again be contesting for the Cullen Cup. The Langley Rams, on the other hand, are perhaps a bit of a surprise.

The Raiders earned their way to championship contest with a convincing 49-17 win over the Westshore Rebels on home turf. The Rams had a much tougher road having to head into the Apple Bowl to face the Okanagan Sun but emerged with a 31-29 upset win.

The Rams will now try to pull off the seemingly impossible for a second straight Saturday when they head into Caledonia Park for the Cullen Cup championship tilt. Kickoff goes at 1 pm. Ticket information is available at www.viraiders.ca. The winner of the Cullen Cup will go on to host the CJFL Intergold game the following weekend.
