BCFC recap: Rams, Sun, & Raiders dominate

The British Columbia Football Conference kicked off the 2013 season on Saturday night as the defending champion 

Langley Rams, Okanagan Sun and VI Raiders all recorded their first wins of the season.

The Rams would shutout the Kamloops Broncos 51-0 behind a very good and well balanced attack offensively gaining 462 total yards including 229 on the ground and 233 through the air.

New quarterback Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren played well in his first game finishing 11 of 25 for 192 yards and threw two touchdowns. He would also run seven times for 75 yards and a major.   He and back up Cecil Belanger would find eight different receivers including Dan English who made a game high four catches for 98 yards and a score.  Malcolm Williams caught three passes for 67 yards and a major.

On the ground Nathan Lund would rumble for 135 yards on 14 carries and would score a touchdown.  After his efforts he was named the McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game.

Kicker Steven Thomas would connect all four of his field goal attempts.

Defensively the Rams would pitch the first shutout of the season forcing three takeaways.  Tanner Hamade would pick off a pass while than Nathan Sheppard, Jarren Curtis Ralf and Blake Schaufelberger each recovered a fumble.  The Rams would also record six quarterback sacks as Evan Foster compiled two and a half, Brandon Klein had a sack and a half and Luke Andrews and Joe Patko each had one.

The Rams (1-0) will host the Westshore Rebels (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm in Week 2.

The Broncos offensively were frustrated by the Rams defense.  Quarterback Connor Whitelaw would complete just five passes for 41 yards and threw the lone interception.

Receiver Devin Csincsa made a team high two catches for 16 yards.  On the ground Jacob Palmarin carried the rock seven times for just 10 yards.

Defensively the Broncos were on the field for the majority of the game.  Ben Groenewegen had a game high five tackles, while Warabek Auyel and Ben Hoffman each had four.  Dan Orydzuk would force the lone turnover with an interception.

The Broncos (0-1) will stay on the road in Week 2 and travel to Chilliwack to face the Huskers (0-1).

 

 

The Okanagan Sun would also record their first win of the new campaign with a convincing 65-10 over the Valley Huskers on Saturday night.

The Sun would platoon their two quarterbacks with each of them play alternating quarters.  Second year pivot Cam Bedore would play the first and third quarters finishing five of nine for 80 yards and two touchdowns.  First year QB Theo Deezar played the second and fourth quarters finishing 11 of 15 for 173 yards with three TD passes.  He would be named the McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game.

The quarterback combination would find seven different receivers.  Jesse Kendall would make four catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns.  Lerone Robinson caught three passes for a game high 83 yards while Tommy Howes also had three catches and two touchdowns.

On the ground Alex Bradley carried 16 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.  Dillon Fortune had five rushes for 55 yards including a 41 yard TD scamper.

Defensively the Sun would force six Husker turnovers including a Robbie Yochim’s 10 yard pick six and 30 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Landon King.  The Sun would also compile two sacks as Jonas Gering and Zac Ironstand each had one.  The Sun Special Teams would collect three blocked kicks as Yochim, Dan Ruddy and Lucas Machado each had one.

The Sun (1-0) will stay at home in Week 2 and host the VI Raiders (1-0) at the Apple Bowl.

The Valley Huskers held a 7-0 lead on Saturday night after they took their opening possession the length of the field in just shy of 12 minutes for the major.  The 15 yard score would come after Danton Nagorski fumbled the snap on a field goal attempt and rumbled to the end zone.

Quarterback Cody Parray would complete 17 passes for 96 yards finding seven different receivers.  Josh Hayden would haul in a game high nine passes for 75 yards.

The Huskers ground attack was led by Ty Derayos who carried eight times for 40 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball the Huskers were led by Buomkuoth Matuet-Samuel who collected five tackles.  Branden Vickers and Zach Neufeld each had three tackles each.

The Huskers (0-1) will host the Kamloops Broncos (0-1) in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

The Vancouver Island Raiders started the season on the right foot, defeating their island rival, the Westshore Rebels 35-10.

 

For the first time in five seasons the Raiders don’t have the CJFL Offensive Player of the Year at quarterback after the graduation of Jordan Yantz.  A new era at pivot has begun as Jahmari Bennett would finish eight of 19 for 96 yards with a touchdown, but threw three interceptions.  He would also use his legs running three times for 36 yards and had a touchdown.

The Raiders would run the football with success on Saturday evening compiling 257 yards.  Nathan Flavel carried 11 times for a game high 82 yards and a touchdown.  Andrew Deleon ran eight times for 51 yards while Ashton Galloway had four carries for 13 yards.

Through the air Galloway would make three catches for 34 yards while Dustin Rodriguez caught two balls for 28 yards and a score.

Defensively the Raiders were led by Nigel Henry who collected seven tackles.  Both Jordan Kuziek and Ash Gayat picked up fumbles while Quinton Bowles recorded the lone sack.

The Raiders (1-0) will stay on the road in Week 2 and travel to Kelowna for a date with the Okanagan Sun (1-0).

The Westshore Rebels without Greg Morris used the passing game for the majority collecting 195 yards.

Mark Black would finish 17 of 36 for 195 yards, including a 41 yard reception to Eric Eggleston.  The veteran receiver who catch five balls in total for 88 yards, while Hunter Lake also caught five passes for 39 yards.

On the ground the Rebels would use both Emanuel Juma and Terry Houngbo-Gody who collected just 50 yards.  Juma carried nine times for 12 yards while Gody had seven carries for 38 yards and a touchdown.

The Rebels defense played well in front of the hometown crowd.  They would force three interceptions from Joe Barkhouse, Curtis Parker and Chris Pastro.    Tanner Rodinsky would tally two sacks, while Pastro also had one.  Pastro would also make five tackles and have four assists on route to being named the McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game.  Rodinsky and Brandon Dugaro each had six tackles.

The Rebels (0-1) will travel to Langley to face the Rams (1-0) on Saturday.
