BCFC: Vancouver Island Raiders win 6th BCFC crown in a row

The Vancouver Island Raiders won their sixth straight Cullen Cup title on Saturday afternoon shutting out the Langley Rams 44-0. It was the largest margin of victory in championship history and is the ninth shutout.

The high octane offense of the Raiders would compile 441 yards on the route to their victory. Offensive Player of the Game quarterback Jordan Yantz finished 14 of 22 for 216 yard and threw three touchdown passes. He would also run five times for 36 yards and scored two touchdowns. The BCFC Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year would find his β€œbig four” receivers as Andrew Smith made four catches for 67 yards and caught two touchdowns. Michael Schaper also hauled in four passes for a game high 102 yards. Whitman Tomusiak made three receptions, one for a major. Dustin Pederson caught four balls.

The Conference’s rushing winner Jordan Botel carried 14 times for 102 yards, while rookie Alex Jobson rushed seven times for 46 yards.

The Special Teams Player of the Game kicker Mark Mueller would be perfect hitting on all three field goal attempts from 24 yards out and a pair of 28 yarders. He also hit all five converts.

The Raiders defence was once again very stingy allowing just 74 yards through the air and would create four turnovers.

The BCFC leader in interceptions during the regular season, Adam Laurensse picked one pass while Ariel Fabbro and Glenn Boyce also had picks. Cole Bishop recovered a fumble and rumbled 79 yards setting a new BCFC record, but fell short of the goal line. Teddy Ash was named the Defensive Player of the Game after his stellar performance with four tackles, two assists and 1.5 sacks. Jonathan Jones also had a great game with five tackles and two assists.

The Raiders will now host the Saskatoon Hilltops in the Josten’s Cup National Semi-Final game in a rematch of last year’s Canadian Bowl. The winner heads to Ontario for the 2011 Canadian Bowl. Saskatoon beat the Calgary Colts 32-3

In their second BCFC final in three years the Langley Rams offence was completely shut down by the Raiders β€œD.” They would compile just 205 yards of total offence on a very wet and chewed up field.

Quarterback Jon Roney was pulled after completing two passes in nine attempts for just 12 yards. Brandon Leyh came off the bench and wasn’t much more effective finishing three of 12 for 62 yards.

The Rams most dangerous weapon Nick Downey caught at team high five passes for 55 yards and would carry twice for 12 yards. He would also get an opportunity to return two kick-offs for 56 yards.

The ground attack was led by Kyle Albertini who rushed 11 times for 142 yards.

The BCFC’s top linebacker Arie Nakagawa had a game high nine tackles while Carlo Graziano had five tackles and an assist. The Rams would manage just one turnover as Spensor Farbatuk picked off a pass

The Ontario Football Conference final will be held in Windsor as the AKO Fratmen will host the St. Leonard Cougars or the Hamilton Hurricanes on Saturday night. The winner hosts the Canadian Bowl
