Week in Review – Week One
Ryan Watters – 7/26/2010
The 2010 BCFC season began where it finished last year. In a rematch of the 2009 Cullen Cup the Vancouver Island Raiders hosted the South Surrey Rams at Caledonia Park. The personnel may have been different, but the outcome was the same; a Raiders win, 37-13.

The Raiders quarterback and Canadian Bowl Top Offensive Player Jordan Yantz was simply awesome, finishing 22 of 34 for 398 yards and threw five touchdown passes. He would find Michael Schaper and Mark Muller twice and Whitman Tomusiak once for scores. Schaper would catch six balls for 115 yards while Tomusiak hauled in four passes for 126 yards.
Without Andrew Harris carrying the ball, the Raiders would use the pass attack against the Rams and would compile just 114 yards on the ground. Jordan Botel led the two time defending champs with eight carries for 75 yards.
The Raiders (1-0) would outgain the Rams 497-252 while extending their winning streak as they have not lost since August 2008. After the departures of Cam Clark, who is attending the University of Manitoba, and Taylor Potkins who signed with the Okanagan Sun, the South Surrey Rams (0-1) had a new look offense this past weekend. Nathaniel White was the starting pivot and finished 10 of 23 for 172 yards and threw one touchdown pass. White would find four different receivers, including former Vancouver Trojan Griffin Bullock who caught four passes for 73 yards. The 2009 All-Canadian Return Specialist Nick Downey scored the only major for the Rams on a rush. He would run twice for 80 yards. He also returned six kicks for 74 yards; his longest return was 55 yards.
The new look Rams defence was led by Nick Felicella who made five tackles and Jordan Linnen picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards. The Raiders will host Chilliwack in week two, while the Rams will travel to Kelowna.

The Victoria Rebels and Chilliwack Huskers both opened the new season with new head coaches as the Rebels John Cardilicchia got the best of Luke Acheson at Exhibition Stadium winning 55-27. The Rebels (1-0) new quarterback Nick Cobb from the University of Manitoba was outstanding in his BCFC debut, completing 11 of 16 for 168 yards, three touchdowns passes and would run for one. He would find seven different receivers and throw touchdown passes to Kyle Pich, Sam Adu and Dallas Holynk. Pich finished with three catches for 115 yards including a 40 yarder.
On the ground the Rebels were led by Adu who carried 13 times for 72 yards, while Rob Ramsay rumbled for 37 yards on six carries. Defensively the Rebels forced three inceptions including a 72 yard β€œpick-six” from Edward Charles. Beau Barthel and Antonio White would also pick off passes. The Huskers (0-1) had their home opener spoiled by the Rebels, but they did see some positive play by quarterback Clayton Kroeker. He was 19 of 35 for 283 yards and threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers. Ben Skerrett, Dylan Kappell, Corey Rollingsa and Nick Diguistini all caught TD passes. Adam Leggott, who was kept out of the end zone received five passes for 78 yards to lead the Huskers, while Skerrett hauled in three passes for 74 yards. The ground game was non-existent for the Huskers, recording just 18 yards. Austin Kappell carried three times for nine yards to lead the club. On the defensive side of the ball, Curtis Schindel had a good game making five tackles and Jason Bates recorded the
only Huskers sack. The Rebels will host Kamloops in week two, while the Huskers travel to the Island to take on the Raiders.

The Okanagan Sun opened the season on the road and recorded a 24-10 win over the Kamloops Broncos. After the graduation of Derek Mann, the Sun turned to Bobby Davis to lead the offence. He would only play the first half and finished nine of 15 for 193 yards and a touchdown pass to Dan Turck. Davis made a number of smart decisions, and looked comfortable as the new number one. Back-up Taylor Potkins saw the majority of the second half
and had success as well. The former Ram finished four of eight for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Turek led the Sun receiving corp with four catches for 73 yards and a major. Matt Scheurwater moves from receiver to slot in 2010 and made three catches for 86 yards. Steven Shott, Mike Friend, Tore Tarcon, Daniel Xavier and Arman Bokitch all made catches for the Sun. Xavier and Tarcon also scored. On the ground the Sun used five different rushers, led by Tarcon who had 11 carries for 26 yards while Bokitch scampered 50 yards on four carries in his BCFC debut. The Sun defence forced six turnovers on Saturday night. Jesse Warawa, Daylon Pommier and Blake Butler each made an inception while Mitch Wolsey, Cody Blanleil and Warawa picked up fumbles.
Despite the score the Broncos played the Sun extremely tough and look to be much improved from their 2-8 season last year. Rookie QB Jesse Neufeld was 14 of 24 for 170 yards and ran for another five. Neufeld and Darcy Macdonald worked the slant to perfection as Macdonald led the Broncos with four catches for 40 yards. The Broncos spread the
ball around as seven different players made catches including Adam Sancewicz who caught three for 60 yards. Defensively the Broncos forced three fumbles as lineman Jacob Bigham picked up a loose ball and rumbled five yards for their only touchdown of the night. Kirby Barker and Tyler Lee also jumped on fumbles.
The Sun (1-0) will host the Rams in Kelowna for week two, while the Broncos (0-1) will travel to Victoria.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
