BCFC – Week 10 in review (record setting 57 yard field goal)

Following a record setting Week 10 of the BCFC, the playoff picture is finally clear. The first place Okanagan Sun will host the fourth place Victoria Rebels on Sunday, while the second place and two-time defending national champion Vancouver Island Raiders will host the third place South Surrey Rams.

On Sunday the 9-1 Okanagan Sun clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs after a 50-15 win over the visiting Victoria Rebels.

Sun kicker/receiver Steven Shott (pictured) had a career day and single handily led the Sun to their ninth win of the year. Shott was 3-3 in field goals setting a new Canadian Junior Football League record with a 57 yarder. He would also hit from 19 and 46 yards out and was 5-6 in converts. He would gain 41 yards on the ground on two muffed punts which would keep the drives alive. Shott made his presence felt on the offensive side as well catching six balls for 213 yards and two touchdowns, one of which was an 88 yard score. Finally he would make a couple of plays at the defensive back position, earning one assisted tackle.

The Sun also got a big day from quarterback Bobby Davis who would complete 14 of 29 for a career high 408 yards and threw three touchdowns passes. He would find Matt Scheurwater for three catches to add to his BCFC receptions record, for 62 yards. Ben White caught three balls for 56 yards and in his final regular season game, Mark Hester caught a 63 yard touchdown pass, his only catch of the game. Davis would also scramble five times for 56 yards and had a one yard touchdown plunge. He is just the fourth Sun quarterback to throw over 400 yards in a game.

The Sun ground attack would struggle as Arman Bokitch led the way with 12 carries for 28 yards and two short touchdown runs.

Defensively the Sun was led by Charles Henderson in his final regular season game. He would account for five solo tackles and one assist. Steven Doege had two tackles, three special teams assists and would recover a fumble. Jesse Warawa would make his league leading ninth interception and four Sun defenders would knock down six passes.

The Sun will now host the Rebels in a BCFC semi-final on Sunday. It’ll be the third straight week the two teams will play each other.

The Victoria Rebels finished the season in fourth place with a 4-6 record following the loss on Sunday. The game meant nothing to the Rebels, as they had locked down the final playoff spot before traveling to the Okanagan.

The Rebels had the opportunity to rest their best weapon in Sam Adu. The Victoria native showed outstanding class by resting on Sunday even though he was in the hunt for the BCFC rushing title, all in preparation for the playoffs.

Without Adu the Rebels would manage just 28 yards on the ground. Johnny Daniel carried four times for nine yards, while Rob Ramsay rumbled three times for 10 yards.

The Rebels starting QB Cat Todorovich was five of 17 for 112 yards and a 57 yard touchdown before suffering an ankle injury in the second quarter. Back up Jordan Pohl would complete 10 of 21 for 91 yards and a touchdown. He would also run twice for 11 yards, leading the Rebels ground game.

Cole Hamlin was the Rebels leading receiver with five catches for 97 yards and had the 57 yard touchdown catch. Kyle Pich had three catches for 39 yards while Niles Goguen also had three catches for 29 yards.

Despite allowing 50 points, the Rebels defence had a solid game. They would force two turnovers, an interception by Blake Ector and a fumble recovery courtesy of Jake Farley. Justin Perrie, Taylor Gudgeon and Farley would all record a sack while Colton Farago and Ramsay would share one. Beau Barthel would make five tackles and had knockdown and Cody McCaughan-Mazur had four tackles. Adam Grilj had three tackles and blocked a convert.

The Sun and Rebels will meet at the Apple Bowl on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm for the right to advance to the Cullen Cup final.

The Vancouver Island Raiders locked down second place on Saturday night with a 77-7 thumping of the Kamloops Broncos. The Raiders would outgain the Broncos 614-137 yards of net offense.

Two Raiders would set records in the game as quarterback Jordan Yantz (right) finished 14 of 23 for 315 yards and threw three touchdowns. With the 14 completions he would set a new BCFC record with 182 (2nd most in the CJFL). Yantz would also rush three times for 21 yards.

Yantz would find Michael Schaper (below left) six times for 147 yards and two touchdowns. His 147 yards would help set a new CJFL single season record for receiving yards as he finishes the year with 1,179. Whitman Tomusiak would make four catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Smith would also make a touchdown catch and finish with three balls for 31 yards.

Jordan Botel continues to lead the Raiders’ ground attack and has legitimately run out of the shadow of Andrew Harris. Botel would carry 18 times for 185 yards and three more touchdowns to give him 13 on the season. With his 185 yards Botel wins the BCFC rushing title this season with 1,261 yards.

For the second consecutive week Aaron Davies would return a kick off for a touchdown. He would spirit 58 yards for a major while adding a 33 yard interception return for another touchdown.

The defence compiled seven turnovers, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Davies, Prashant Chaube, Ranji Atwall and Andrew Rowe made picks, while Teddy Ash and Kevin Erickson jumped on fumbles and Matt Moretto picked up a loose ball and ran 10 yards for a major. Ryan Wellman and Atwall had two sacks, while Oake recorded one sack.
The Raiders will now host the South Surrey Rams on Saturday afternoon in a BCFC semi-final.

The Kamloops Broncos finished their 2010 season on Saturday night at home.

Dylan La Prairie was five of 16 for 68 yards, while Jesse Neufeld finished four of 10 for 36 yards and threw the only touchdown of the game for the home side.

Sean Poeppell made two catches for 45 yards to lead the receiving corps. Dave Boulton caught two balls for 44 yards and Don Calvert’s only catch was a 13 yard touchdown.

Spencer Martin led the Broncos on the ground with five carries for 25 yards.

The Bronco “D” forced three turnovers as Clayton Ludba recovered two fumbles and Justin Blanchard picked off a pass. Alex Adams had six solo tackles and one assist while Mitch Day had four solo tackles, one assist and one special teams tackle.

The South Surrey Rams clinched third place in the BCFC despite a scare from the winless Chilliwack Huskers; 33-21.

The Rams were led by their Special Teams accounting for 26 of their 33 overall points. Nick Downey (left) returned his third punt of the season 80 yards for a major, while Jordan Linnen ran back a kick-off 95 yards for a score. Kicker Nick Boyd was good on all four field goal attempts, hitting from 18, 30, 37 and 39 yards out.

Offensively the Rams sputtered as quarterback Taylor Potkins was 10 of 22 for 153 yards and had one touchdown. He would also carry six times for 22 yards on an injured ankle. Griffin Bullock led the receivers with four catches for 47 yards and Downey caught two passes for 45 yards and had a touchdown.

Malcolm Freeman carried six times for 36 yards to lead the ground game. Jake Glass had three carries for 22 yards.

On the defensive side the Rams tallied two sacks; Spencer Boehm had a solo sack while Cody MacInnes and Matt Mceachern shared one. Linnen had four solo tackles and an assist while eight other Rams had a multi-tackle game.

The Rams will now prepare for a BCFC semi-final against the Raiders in Nanaimo on Saturday. These two teams met last year in the Cullen Cup at Caledonia Park with the Raiders coming out victorious, despite a number of fights between the two clubs.

The Chilliwack Huskers concluded the regular season without a win in 2010. They had one of their best games on the year, outgaining the Rams 345-228 in net offensive yards.

Ben Skerrett (right) had a wonderful game with 247 all purpose yards. On the ground he would carry 16 times for 106 yards and had a touchdown. He would catch two passes for 18 yards and compile 123 return yards.

Mike Matchette caught seven passes for 74 yards and had a touchdown, while Adann Hendrickson had caught seven balls for 31 yards.

Jackson Bates would account for the other Huskers touchdown, carrying three times for 46 yards and a major. John Smeysters carried twice for 33 yards.

Hendrickson would also finish nine of 17 for 101 yards and a touchdown as the Huskers main quarterback.

Defensively, Dan Broberg, Jason Dumas and Levi Weaver each had four tackles. Mitch Bessette added an interception. Sam Looysen had a solo sack, while Shane Adams and Ryan Hipwell shared one.

The 2010 BCFC postseason begins this Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday the #2 Raiders host the #3 Rams at Caledonia Park, then on Sunday the #1 Sun host the #4 Rebels at the Apple Bowl.
