BCFC – Week 5 in review

The BCFC has reached the halfway point of the 2010 season with a log jam in the standings.

In South Surrey the Rams used a well balanced attack to win their third straight game, downing the Kamloops Broncos 59-14.

The 59 points are the most a team has scored in a single game this season. Rams rookie quarterback Nathaniel White had another big game completing 12 of 21 for 302 yards and four touchdown passes, including a 72 yard bomb to Matt Chapdelaine, his only catch of the game. White would also hit Griffin Bullock four times for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Nick Downey scored on a 39 yard completion. White ran eight times for 23 yards and scored a touchdown.
The Rams would also use the ground game to pound the Broncos. Sean O’Neill carried six times for 42 yards and Malcolm Freeman ran five times for 35 yards. On Special Teams Downey returned his second punt of the year for a touchdown on a 57 yard sprint. “Mr. Utility”
Bullock used his foot to add to his offensive output hitting a 14 yard field goal and was 3-3 in converts. The Rams defence would add to the score thanks to an 80 yard interception return for touchdown by Belah Small, his fifth of the year. Not to be outdone, Joe Lester had a “pick-six” after his 50 yard interception return. Karl Delong also had an interception and Kurt Pederson, Clint Flaten and Kyle Ouwehand had full quarterback sacks while Matt McEachern and Andrew Doherty shared one.
The Kamloops Broncos had their two game winning streak abruptly end scoring just one touchdown on Saturday. The Broncos used three quarterbacks who would finish 16 of 38 for 209 yards and three interceptions.
Darcy Macdonald led the receiving corps with four catches for 100 yards, while Adam Nesbitt also caught four balls for 45 yards.
The Broncos would get their only touchdown on the ground as Clayton Ludba would rumble 60 yards for the score. He would finish with four carries for 63 yards.
The reigning BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week Aaron Smit would tally the other Bronco seven points with two field goals from 38 and 41 yards and a convert.
The 3-2 Rams will stay at home and host the 4-1 Raiders, while the 2-3 Broncos will travel to Kelowna for a date with the 4-1 Sun.

The Okanagan Sun remain in first place after a 50-0 drubbing of the Chilliwack Huskers and raise their record to 4-1.
The Sun would score early and often out gaining the home side 332-93 in total offense. Starting quarterback Bobby Davis was five of nine for 55 yards and a touchdown, while back-ups Taylor Potkins was three of four for 38 yards and Drew Jacobsen finished one of four.
The Sun offense took advantage of seven takeaways and worked with a short field all night. Receiver Matt Scheurwater led the way through the air with three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Ben White recorded his first touchdown as a member of the Sun with a 20 yard grab.
On the ground rookie Arman Bokitch demonstrated some outstanding moves on his nine carries as he picked up 68 yards. Tore Tarcon carried seven times for 58 yards and a touchdown and
Potkins scampered nine yards for a score. The defence of the Sun was simply terrific, picking off four passes and causing three fumbles. Tyler Robson had a big night recovering a fumble and a 30 yard “pick six,” his first of the season. Hayden Bell, Daylon Pommier and Jesse Warawa also had interceptions.
Warawa’s fifth pick ties him for the league lead. Charles Henderson led the club with five tackles. Addison Malkowich blocked a punt at the Husker goal line and Tyler Plock fell on the loose ball for a touchdown.
Kicker Steven Shott recorded a personal best 51 yard field goal in the ball game. He added seven kick offs for 293 net yards.
Nothing really went right for the Chilliwack Huskers on Saturday night as they fell to 0-5 and recorded just four first downs and 93 yards of total offense. QB Clayton Kroeker sat out after an injury last week as rookie Cory Prince made his first start of the season. Prince, who just graduated from high school, finished eight of 17 for 55 yards, but threw three interceptions. Third-stringer Adann Hendrickson saw action late in the game and would complete two of three for 16 yards and an interception.
On the ground Austin Kappel carried the load running 13 times for 35 yards. Adam Leggott caught two passes for 16 yards.
The Husker defence saw a lot of time on the field as they picked off two passes. Andy Goyer and Jason Dumas each had an interception. Sam Looysen and Shane Adams were outstanding as Looysen recorded nine tackles along with two quarterback sacks. Adams had seven tackles and three sacks.
The Sun will host the Kamloops Broncos on Saturday night, while the Huskers will travel to Victoria.

The Vancouver Island Raiders were able to keep pace with the Sun thanks to a 46-15
victory over the home town Victoria Rebels to raise their record to 4-1.
Raiders QB Jordan Yantz continues to put up big numbers. He finished 13 of 16 for 269
yards and four more touchdowns. He now has 15 to lead the league. Michael Schaper
tallied three more catches for 124 yards, while Rob Gallaugher caught four balls for 56
yards and two touchdowns.
Despite most of their damage through the air, the Raiders were led by Nick Lauder on the
ground with nine carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Lauder was also great on Special
Teams returning a 105 yard kick off for a touchdown. Jordan Botel carried the rock eight
times for 45 yards.
On the defensive side the Raiders held the Rebels to just 15 points as Andrew Oake had
seven tackles and Aaron Davies had six. The “D” would force three turnovers as Drew Makortoff and Termaine
Apperley had interceptions and Walker Morrison recovered a fumble.
The Victoria Rebels have now lost three straight despite 214 yards on the ground and 339 total offence.
Sunday afternoon quarterback Nick Cobb had most of his success when he handed off or ran. Through the air he was eight of 18 for 90 yards, but threw two interceptions. When he ran, he picked up 44 yards on five carries. Sam Adu was able to have an impact as he carried 23 times for 152 yards and had a touchdown. Cat Todorovich recorded the other Rebels touchdown after a 12 yard run on his only carry of the game.
Vincenzo Cannata caught three balls and had 50 yards to lead the ball club, while Adu out of the back field caught two passes for 34 yards.
Defensively Nick Duncan tallied seven tackles and had a knock down, while Adam Grilj recorded six tackles. Eddie Charles and Mike Barry each had an interception to give the Rebels eight on the season, which is second most in the BCFC.
The 4-1 Raiders will stay on the road and travel to Surrey on Saturday, while the 2-3 Rebels will host Chilliwack.

Kick returner Ben Skerrett of the Chilliwack Huskers became the BCFC All-Time kickoff
yardage return leader during the Huskers game against the Sun on Saturday evening.
Ben had 99 yards in returns which gives him 1342 for his career in the BCFC. His 1342 yards is three more than the previous mark of 1339 which was held by former Vancouver Island Shark / Victoria Rebel Joe Orel who played from 1994-96 with the Sharks and 1998 with the Rebels.
Ben is two returns behind Orel’s all time return mark of 65. Another record that Ben
will over take before the season is finished.
