BCFC – Week 8 in review


Week 8 of the BCFC saw the road team win all three games as the Raiders, Rebels and Sun picked up victories.

Saturday afternoon the Vancouver Island Raiders won their seventh game of the campaign blasting the Chilliwack Huskers 65-7. The Raiders would total 730 offensive yards at Exhibition Stadium.
Quarterback Jordan Yantz was once again terrific leading the two time defending champs. He would finish 27 of 36 for 414 yards and threw five more touchdown passes before the back-ups saw action.
Andrew Smith hauled in nine passes for 167 and found the end zone twice. Not to be outdone, BCFC receiving leading Michael Schaper (pictured) caught nine passes for 154 yards and scored two touchdowns. Whitman Tomusiak finished with six catches for 66 yards and had a major.
On the ground, the Raiders would rumble for 255 yards behind Jordan Botel. The tailback carried 16 times for 173 yards and scored four touchdowns. Zack Brandham chipped in with four carries for 55 yards.
Defensively the Raiders forced three interceptions as Matt Moretto had a pair, and Walker Morrison had one. Andrew Oake would tally three tackles have one assist and had one knockdown. Andreas Iwanegbe recorded the lone Raiders quarterback sack and had two knockdowns.
The Chilliwack Huskers fall to 0-8 on the season after compiling just 163 yards of net offense. A banged up Clayton Kroeker was five of 20 for 88 yards and threw three picks.
Five different receivers caught pass as the ground attack gained 96 yards. Misha Otanga led the way with four carries for 87 yards and would score the lone touchdown for the Huskers.
The best unit for the Huskers on Saturday afternoon was the defence. They gave their offence chances after five turnovers. Jason Dumas had a great game with two interceptions, four solo tackles, two special teams tackles and two assists. Levi Weaver had a pick and fumble recovery to add to his knockdown and four solo tackles. Andy Goyer had five solo tackles, while Warren Jurak jumped on a fumble.
The 7-1 Raiders will now begin a home and home with the Kamloops Broncos this weekend as the 0-8 Huskers will host the South Surrey Rams in the first of their back to back.

The lone Saturday night contest was in Kamloops where the Broncos hosted the Victoria Rebels. In a low scoring affair, the Rebels held on for a 13-9 victory to reach the .500 mark.
The Rebels gave quarterback Nick Cobb the night off as Cat Todorovich completed just six passes out of 22 attempts for 116 yards. He would throw the only touchdown of the game, finding Kyle Pich from 24 yards out.
On the ground the Rebels would give the rock to Sam Adu 21 times as he scampered for 149 yards. Todorovich would gain 34 yards on 11 carries as the Rebels ran the ball 33 times.
The only other offensive points the Rebels would score was a 20 yard field goal and a single from kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk.
The Rebels defence would get on the board with a safety. Colton Farago had an outstanding game with seven solo tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. Cody McCaughan-Mazur added three solo tackles and an interception, while Taylor Gudgeon recovered a fumble, had two solo tackles, a sack and a knockdown. Adam Grilj added four solo tackles and three assists.
With the victory the Rebels clinched a playoff berth; however the positioning is still to be determined. Congratulations

Following the loss the Kamloops Broncos fall to 3-5 on the season and are still in the playoff hunt. All the Broncos scoring came from the reigning BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Kicker Aaron Smit was 3-4 in field goals connecting from 18 yards and a pair of 36 yarders.
The Broncos used three quarterbacks, with Jesse Neufeld seeing most of the action. He would finish nine of 23 for 69 yards, but threw two interceptions. Seven different Broncos caught passes as Dan Calvert had two catches for 34 yards and Darcy MacDonald hauled in two balls for 26 yards.
On the ground, Josh Adams tallied 21 yards, with Clayton Ludba, the reigning BCFC Offensive Player of the Week, carried six times for 17 yards.
The Kamloops defence continues to have success as Mitch Day had an outstanding game. He would make four solo tackles, two assists, one special teams tackle and would recover a fumble for the only takeaway the Broncos would get. Jonah Woodward was also outstanding with six solo tackles and one assist. Tyler Lee, this week’s BCFC Spotlight player, finished with five tackles.
The 4-4 Rebels will host the Okanagan Sun in the first of a home and home on Sunday, while the 3-5 Broncos will travel to Nanaimo to face the Vancouver Island Raiders.

On Sunday afternoon the streak continued. The first place Okanagan Sun jumped to 7-1 and remain in first place after their 47-0 shut-out of the South Surrey Rams. The Sun defence hasn’t given up a point in 17 quarters and forced five turnovers to add to their league lead of 40 takeaways.
The Sun “D” allowed just 55 yards of total offense on Sunday afternoon. The club was led once
again by defensive lineman Steve Doege (pictured left) who caused havoc all day long. He would finish with 1.5 sacks, setting a new Sun team record with 18.5 in just his 18th career game, 1-1/2 more than the 17 that Jordan Fast, who played from 2001-2004.
Doege would share his sack with Alex Law, while Charles Henderson recorded a solo sack. The turnovers included two interceptions by Aaron Goddard and Nemanja Miskin, while Davend Reddy, David Vanderveen and Jesse Warawa recovered fumbles.
The Sun offense played well as quarterback Bobby Davis finished 16 of 21 for 368 yards and five touchdown passes. Davis would hit Matt Scheurwater twice, Steven Shott, Mark Hester and DJ Weber for major scores.
Scheurwater set a new BCFC record for receiving yards after his three catches for 69 yards. The Calgary native now has 2,937 receiving yards with two regular season games left in his junior football career. The old record was held by former Surrey Ram receiver Brian Remming who finished his BCFC career with 2887 yards on 163 receptions. Matt who has 161 receptions is three catches away from establishing a new career mark for pass receptions. Dan Turek made six catches for 116 yards.
Shott had a wonderful game making five catches for 149 yards and recorded his first touchdown of the season. He was also 4-5 in field goals connecting from 20 yards twice and had a 21 and 32 yarder. He was also 5-5 in converts and would score 23 of the 47 points the Sun would accumulate.
The ground attack was also solid for the Sun as they recorded 181 yards on 37 carries. Arman Bokitch spirited 95 yards on 15 carries. Davis and Tore Tarcon each carried the rock 10 times, as Davis compiled 40 yards, to Tarcon’s 38.
The Sun would amass 525 offensive yards and gave up just 55 to the Rams.
After the loss the South Surrey Rams fall to 3-5, but are still in the playoff hunt. Their offense struggled for the second straight game as they didn’t cross midfield in the second half. Quarterback Nathaniel White was eight of 22 for 68 yards and threw a pick. His favourite receiver was Matt Chapdelaine, who caught three balls for 35 yards. Griffin Bullock had two catches for 16 yards. On the ground the Rams totalled just 15 yards, as Jake Glass led the way with five carries for eight yards.
Defensively the Rams created two turnovers, but the offense couldn’t capitalize. Both Jordan Linnen and Chapdelaine recovered fumbles. Kurt Pedersen had a solid game with six solo tackles and a sack. Andrew Doherty had 2.5 sacks and four solo tackles, while Bob Brown also picked up a sack. In total seven Ram players had a multi-tackle game. The 7-1 Sun will now travel to Victoria in the first of a home and home with the Rebels. The 3-5 Rams will look to keep their playoff hopes alive as they play in Chilliwack.
