BCFC – Week 9 in review


After Week 9 of the BCFC, all four playoff teams have been determined, however positioning still remains in question.
The four post season reams are the Okanagan Sun, Vancouver Island Raiders, South Surrey Rams and Victoria Rebels.

The lone Saturday game saw the Vancouver Island Raiders sink the Kamloops Broncos 63-22 at Caledonia Park. With the win the Raiders hold onto second place with an 8-1 record. Quarterback Jordan Yantz finished 19 of 27 for 267 yards and four more touchdowns. He also rushed three times for 11 yards and a touchdown. Yantz would connect with Michael Schaper six times for 108 yards and two majors. He would also find Whitman Tomusiak five times for 61 yards and a score, and hit Andrew Smith four times for 39 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, Jordan Botel carried the rock 19 times for 155 yards and a touchdown. The rest of the Raiders would record just 33 additional yards.
The Raiders Special Teams was also terrific on Saturday, highlighted by a 102 yard kick-off return for a touchdown by
Aaron Davies. Kicker Mark Mueller was two for two in field goals hitting from 32 and 37 yards, and was 8-8 in converts.
Defensively the Raiders were led by Teddy Ash who collected four solo tackles, two assists, one special teams tackle, one sack and one fumble recovery. Andrew Oake recorded one solo tackle, three assists, one knockdown and had the only interception of the game.
The Kamloops Broncos had the lead in this game but couldnā€™t hang on as they dropped their sixth game of the year and fall to 3-6.
Quarterback Dylan La Prairie finished seven of 17 for 150 yards, had a touchdown and two interceptions. He would also run five times for 19 yards and had a touchdown. La Prairieā€™s only passing major was a 45 yarder to Dave Boulton, his only catch of the game. Don Calvert caught two passes for 51 yards and Brennan Plante also caught two balls for 27 yards. Once again Clayton Ludba led the Broncosā€™ ground attack with 16 carries for 64 yards and had a touchdown.
The Bronco defence once again played well as Mitch Day compiled three solo tackles, one special teams tackle, had a sack and recovered two fumbles. Justin Blanchard, Kyle Armstrong and Mark Gratton all had three solo tackles. Nine Broncos had a multi-tackle game.
The Raiders and Broncos will play the second half of their home and home to wrap up the regular season on Saturday in Kamloops.

The South Surrey Rams punched their ticket to the post season on Sunday afternoon after a 31-14 victory in Chilliwack. The Rams used defence and special teams to raise their record to 4-5.
Two of the three touchdowns scored by the Rams were courtesy of a ā€œpick-six.ā€ Karl Delong returned an interception 37 yards, while Spencer Boehm returned his 21 yards. Kelko King picked off two passes, had two solo tackles and a knockdown, while Cody MacInnes recorded three solo tackles, five assists, a special teams tackle and a sack. Kurt Pedersen had two sacks and two tackles.
Special teams was a big factor for the Rams as Nick Downey returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown, while kicker Nick Boyd was 3-4 in field goals, hitting from 35, 42 and 14 yards out.
Offensively the Rams struggled with 150 yards of total offense; 44 on the ground and 125 threw the air.
Quarterback Taylor Potkins was 13 of 24 for 120 yards and threw two picks. Matt Chapdelaine caught five of those passes for 29 yards, while Downey and Griffin Bullock both caught three balls.
The ground game was held in check by the Huskers as Jake Glass carried seven times for 21 yards to lead the Rams.
The Chilliwack Huskers fell to 0-9 and finished the home portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Huskers outgained the Rams 159-150.
Three different Huskersā€™ quarterbacks completed 14 passes to nine different receivers. Cory Prince was seven of 21 for 97 yards and threw a touchdown. Clayton Kroeker was six of 13 for 20 yards.
Mike Matchetteā€™s only catch was a four yard touchdown pass from Prince, while Adann Henderickson caught three passes for 45 yards. On the ground Austin Kappell carried nine times for 34 yards and scored a touchdown. Misha Otanga rushed five times for 21 yards.
Defensively the Huskers were solid, forcing two turnovers. Mike Decloedt picked off a pass and returned it 60 yards, while Jason Dumas also had an interception. Jason Bates had six solo tackles and a knockdown. Shane Adams, Ryan Hipwell and Dan Coffin all had sacks, while eight Huskers had multi tackle games.
The Rams and Huskers will conclude the regular season at the South Surrey Athletic Park on Saturday night. Itā€™ll bethe season finale for the Huskers.

In a potential playoff preview, the Okanagan Sun won their eighth game of the season Sunday afternoon in Victoria beating the Rebels 44-27 in their home finale.
The reigning CJFL offensive player of the week, quarterback Bobby Davis finished 11 of 21 for 253 yards and threw five touchdowns. He would also run eight times for 45 yards, while finding five different receivers.
Steven Shott caught three passes for 87 yards including a 70 yard touchdown reception. He would also hit two field goals of 51 and 40 yards and was 4-4 in converts. Matt Scheurwater set a new BCFC record for receptions catching three on the afternoon and had a 12 yard touchdown. Scheurwater now sits atop the record books with 164 career receptions. The record comes one week after setting a new BCFC mark for receiving yards. Arman Bokitch caught two passes which ended up in touchdowns, while Ben White caught a 63 yard touchdown pass from Davis. Bokitch would also lead the run game with 12 carries for 95 yards. Tore Tarcon chipped in with six carries for 40 yards.
The Sun defence was again stood tall, led by Tyler Plock and Jesse Warawa. Plock finished with five solo tackles, one special teams assist and one knockdown. Warawa picked off two passes for his league leading eighth. Steven Doege collected two more sacks and now has 20.5 in 20 career games.
The Victoria Rebels fall to 4-5 on the year after the loss in their home finale. Regardless of what happens this weekend at the Apple Bowl, the Rebels will have a chance for payback in the BCFC semi-final against the Sun.
Quarterback Cat Todorovich completed 16 of 37 for 306 yards, had three touchdowns and three picks. Travis Corazza had a big game with two touchdowns including an 89 yarder. Sam Adu would make five catches for 58 yards. Adu was also great on the ground, setting a new Rebels single season rushing record. His 92 yards gives him 1,112 for the season with a game still to play.
On Special teams kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk was 2-2 in field goals hitting from 27 and 38 yards out, and was 3-3 in converts.
The Rebels ā€œDā€ would force four Sun turnovers on the afternoon including interceptions by Cody McCaughan-Mazur and Sean Bissionette and fumble recoveries by Zack Sindulescu and Beau Barthel. Adam Grilj had six solo tackles and two assists, while Colton Farago compiled four solo tackles, two assists, one special teams tackle and a forced fumble.

The Sun and Rebels will lock up for the tail end of the home and home this Sunday afternoon at the Apple Bowl to conclude the regular season.
