Beefs put up a W in Brampton

Finally the Beefs put together four quarters of football and, not surprisingly, the result
was a victory. Saturday night in Brampton (actually Mississauga because that’s where
Brampton is playing this year) the offense, defense and special teams all contributed to
the victory.

The elements did not lend themselves to a great football evening. Intermittent rain,
sometimes heavy, and a gusting wind played havoc with the passing and kicking game
but the Beefs prevailed.
Brampton started off the game with their familiar double-wing, very tight formation that
is designed to pound away on the ground and eat up the clock. Initially it was successful
as the Bears scored the opening touchdown on a good drive. The extra point was blocked
and the Bears ended the first quarter up 6-0.
From that point on, however, it was a Beefs’ night. C.J. Zsoldos had his best game as a
Beefeater running back, picking up 72 yards on 13 carries plus an impressive 3
touchdowns. Fullback Peter Moressa chipped in 27 yards on 4 carries plus a touchdown.
Newcomer John McMorran checked in with 31 yards on 8 carries while James Morrissey
surprised the Brampton defense with a nifty reverse that garnered 27 yards at a crucial
part of the contest.
In the air, quarterback Eric Grayson, back from his arm injury, spread the ball around to
six different receivers. His main target was Morrissey who had 3 receptions for 65 yards,
including a crucial 43- yard catch.
Brampton didn’t score again until the final seconds of the contest when the result was no
longer an issue.
Carmine Gentile contributed 3 converts and a single on a missed field goal.
Defensively the usual suspects had good games. Rob Bowman, Rob Varallo and Grant
Weaver were the leading defensive players although the entire group had a good outing,
especially the defensive line that were constantly bombarded by a fierce little fullback on
a quick opener up the middle out of the double wing offense.
