Belgain WR, Jr. Argo DB ready to add to Gaiters’ ‘rich history’

Bishop’s brings in one out-of-province and one international commit to their Class of 2017.

Matthew Craens, a wide receiver from the Belgian national team and Nicholas Cartagenis, a defensive back from the Toronto Jr. Argos (Kinsmen Minor Football League), may be coming from two very different places, but they will be heading to the same place, the Bishop’s Gaiters.

Matthew Craens has travelled quite extensively for his football career. He began playing with the John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute Royals (Upper Grand District School Board) in Guelph, Ontario. After two years, he found himself in Portugal playing with the Algarve Sharks (Portuguese League of American Football Division 1). Now, he is a member of the Belgian national football team. Soon, he will be heading to Sherbrooke, Québec.

“The minute I arrived at Bishop’s, I had a feeling this was a place that could help me grow and achieve my goals as an athlete, student and overall a person. Every person at Bishop’s was like family. It’s a beautiful campus with everything near to each other, something that you won’t have going to a bigger school” he said.

Craens currently calls Leuven, Belgium, home. By September, he will be giving the title to Sherbrooke. While the team is currently rebuilding, Craens likes what he sees. “The Gaiters already have talent and great facilities,” he said. “The rich history of Gaiter football will only grow with the group of players and coaches that have the support of not only the school, but also the Sherbooke community.”

Standing at 5’10, 175lbs, he is interested in taking sports studies with a minor in physiology. While with the Algarve Sharks, he was part of a team that went from not winning a single game to making the playoffs. When he joined the Belgian national team, he started both games versus Spain and Hungary to which the team captured both wins.

Nicholas Cartagenis

Nicholas Cartagenis will be moving to Quebec from his home in Toronto, Ontario. Standing at 6’0, 170lbs, he has played with Agincourt Collegiate Institute.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
