Big fourth quarter by Laurier does in the new look Lions (VIDEO & stats)

The York University Lions football team opened its season with a 46-7 loss to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Monday (Sep. 5) in front of 4,300 ecstatic fans at York Stadium.

After a very competitive first three quarters, the Golden Hawks exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter, sending a largely pro-Lions crowd home disappointed but hopeful.

Lions quarterback Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a solid game at pivot, going 15-37 for 136 yards and leading his squad in rushing with 25 yards on five carries. Rookie running back George Daniel (East York, Ont.) led all Lions receivers with 26 yards on two catches, including a lengthy 20-yard reception.

On defence, rookie defensive back Marcus Grandison (Toronto) led the Lions in tackles with 9.5, followed by veteran defensive lineman Steve Reading (Fenelon Falls, Ont.), who picked up seven tackles on the day, including one for a loss. Grandison also had an interception in the game, the first of his CIS career.

Golden Hawks quarterback Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) went 26-43 for 339 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception on the day. Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) led all receivers with seven receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown, and Anton Bennett ran for a game-high 52 yards on nine carries. Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the team in tackles with 5.5, including one sack and one tackle for a loss.

The Golden Hawks opened the scoring early in the first quarter, earning two points on the Lions opening drive. After a quick two-and-out, the Lions were pushed deep into their own end zone on third down and forced to concede a safety.

Following the safety, the Golden Hawks went to work on their own opening drive, pushing downfield and finding the end zone on a 35-yard TD pass from Kelly to Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont). Ronald Pfeffer (Kitchener, Ont.) quickly followed up with a rouge off the kickoff to put the Golden Hawks up 10-0.

Later in the quarter, the Lions, deep in their own end zone yet again, would concede another safety, putting the Golden Hawks up 12-0 at the break.

In the second quarter, it was the Lions who found the scoreboard first. After Grandison’s interception put the Lions on the Golden Hawks’ 35-yard line, Heneri Dervishi (Toronto) converted on a 33-yard field goal that cut the Golden Hawks’ lead to 12-3.

With three seconds remaining before the half, however, the Golden Hawks restored their 12-point lead with a 25-yard field goal from Pfeffer and took a 15-3 lead into halftime.

The Lions came out of halftime hungry and dominated the third quarter. Moments after earning a single point on a rouge from fourth-year punter Dror David (Richmond Hill, Ont.), the Lions would capitalize on a shanked punt from Pfeffer with a 30-yard field goal from Dervishi to trim the Golden Hawks’ lead to 15-7. Neither team would score for the remainder of the quarter, setting up an important fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, any hopes of a Lions comeback were shattered when Kelly connected with Russ Jirgens (Burlington, Ont.) on an eight-yard TD pass to increase the Golden Hawks lead to 22-7.

After a 27-yard field goal from Pfeffer put the Golden Hawks up 25-7, Kelly went to work again, finding Chambers on a 45-yard TD pass that put the game out of reach at 32-7.

Bosch continued a big quarter for the Golden Hawks with a 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, and backup quarterback Dillon Campbell (Whitby, Ont.) added a 13-yard rushing touchdown to put the Golden Hawks up for good, 46-7.

The Lions will be in action again on Saturday (Sep. 10) when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues in the 42nd annual Red & Blue Bowl. Kickoff is at 1 pm at York Stadium.

Notes: The frosh crowd had lots of fun at the game, which featured a live robot dance, sedan race and cheer off. Concessions were open and everyone enjoyed a bite to eat while cheering on the Lions. Calumet was the winner of a pizza party for their college.
