Bishop Tonnes Titan QB commits to SMU Huskies

Huskies welcome an out-of-province commit to their Class of 2017.

Alex Petty, a quarterback from Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School, will be climbing down the Niagara Escarpment and heading out to the east coast after signing with the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

Recruitment can be a nerve-wrecking and exciting time for players. It’s a chance to reap a reward for years of hard work. For any given coaching staff, however, recruitment can be a bit of a marathon. “When Head Coach Colzie III was telling me about all the travelling and driving he has done to meet with all the recruits, I was really impressed with that and also curious to how much sleep he gets,” Petty said.

“That man has the drive and motivation I desire. I love his dedication to this team and it’s rebuilding stage,” he added.

Hailing from Ancaster, Ontario, which is southwest of Hamilton, Saint Mary’s University appealed to Petty because of the beautiful campus and the city of Halifax itself. The future commerce student also chose the school because of the Sobey School of Business, which he said will give him better opportunities after football.

Standing at 6’1, 185lbs, he has played with the Burlington Stampeders (Burlington Minor Football Association), the Brantford Bisons (OFL) and the Bishop Tonnos Titans (Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association).

“I have worked with Coach Kelly Ireland in Brantford and I thought he was a great coach and he is also a really good person to talk to off the field as well,” Petty said.

During his time with the Titans, he won a team MVP in the Steel Bowl while in grade 11. “But that was the reflection of my team,” Petty said. “I have them to thank for that award.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
